I think sunlight is great if you want to make every contact mark look like it was produced with a sledge hammer.

I always have lighting issues so my best pictures are outdoors, but at least I use a copy stand.

Artificial light in a studio setting works best for product shots, as in coins.

ive seen a few ebay sellers get superb images via ambient light, not direct sunlight usually but they represent a very small group.

some like these are alright, so long as the images are large and fairly close.

would be funny to see someone chuck a slab into the grass though.
