What's the latest an auction has run?

Have any of the large US auction run into the early morning hours?

The reason I ask is a very recent very large Canadian auction didn't end till almost 4am!!

If I was the owner of those fine quality coins, I'd be very peeved at the auctioneer as the winning bids on most of the early morning lots went very cheap.

Obviously, you're talking about the Torex sale in February. Well, considering that one of the original collectors who put the coins together has been dead for 100 years, I don't think he worried about the lateness of the hour!

Seriously, though, I've attended my share of Heritage auctions that have gone to 4:00 in the morning - haven't done it in a few years and I'm too old to do it again.

I could be wrong but the Landon collection (100 year old collector) ended first. It was a second collector (a living big-player in the Canadian market) whose collection was sold in the wee hours of the morning for next to nothing.

I consigned some currency to HA once that went off at 3:30 AM - I wasn't too pleased, but figured the people that were interested already left podium or internet bids.

There was just a major auction of ancient coins, consisting of 1800 lots, sold over 12 consecutive hours. I bid some at the beginning, got a night's sleep, and bid some at the end. It was surprisingly convenient here in the US but lasted from 11am-11pm local time in Europe.

Mervis went really really late. I don't remember how late it went but it was going slow at Midnight with more to come.

One of the US sessions in the Goldberg auction this week ran from 1:00pm eastern to just short of 1:00am eastern. Online bidding seemed to slow things down. Just about have to leave bids prior which I did, but also checked in live at times and did some bidding. Ended up with nothing though was underbidder on a number of lots. Can't imagine waiting til 4 am.

Have sessions been getting longer with internet bidding or has it usually been that long?

Sept 2010 Long Beach auction went, until the very wee hours, as I recall. I was bidding on my 1929-D, which I still think is one of the nicest examples that I've ever seen. My lot came up at 12:30 AM PT and 3:30 AM ET. West coasters MUST have had a slight advantage. I won. It was uber late by the time I got to bed. I had to work the next day and got NO sleep. No regrets. image
