How does US customs treat collectors coins coming in to the USA?

Hello,
Am sure most of you have some experience importing coins to the US.
I am wondering how customs looks at these imports and or how they assess duties ?? based on what value? taxes etc?? IF any.

I've had quite a few coins and medals sent by mail and never had any customs or duty fees on them.

Collectors coins are not subject to customs. See Harmonized Tariff Schedule, Chapter 97.

That is a beef I have with the EU! How is it fair trade if when we who reside in the US don't have to pay import taxes while those in the EU have to pay outrageous import taxes!

Just be careful that they are not coming in from Greece, Cyprus etc where the Customs Service has agreements to return "cultural antiquities".

BTW I have gotten some rather pricey coins from Britain through registered post with no issues.

    thanks so far guys.
when your coins came into the USA, where the declaration always correct? or where they "adjusted"?
    with other words:
was your 2000 dollar coin declared with a value of $ 2000?, as an example.
    and,
will US customs collect any other federal or State taxes, depending which state the mail is destined for?
