Not commenting on the condition of the card or the price, that is one ugly card. That was the best photo Topps could come up with for a young Ozzie Newsome?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
If it's being shilled, that's an extremely risky move, because the seller would have to pay Rick at least $2000 to get his card back if he ends up winning.
It looks like two guys want it and 25 grand is not a lot of money to some.. Everytime I submit cards I hope for a bone but this is the whole bull and then some....
<< <i>If it's being shilled, that's an extremely risky move, because the seller would have to pay Rick at least $2000 to get his card back if he ends up winning. >>
How does that work, exactly? I'm sure Rick will at some point stop paying out for auctions over X amount until he receives payment
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
Insanity. Why not take the $25,800, buy 248.8 PSA 9's at $103.69 a pop (VCP average), resubmit them all at $6+ a slab (claim they are worth $99), and see what happens. Those are pretty good odds.
Either that or pay $14.91 for a nice PSA 8 and use the rest to send your child to a nice college for a year.

Why would he, if he's getting $2k for not doing much (accepting and returning a card)? That's where ethical behavior becomes a factor... which doesn't pass muster IMO. Which is why I stay away.

This is probably negotiated before the bidding starts.
<< <i>Looks like only two different bidders over $2500. So one of them owns this card and the other owns the other 10.
Can someone tell me the risk exactly? It's not like either one of them is going to jail for non-payment. >>
These are actually two legit bidders who often battle it out like this. I've seen plenty of illogical choices by these two both together and separately. It's like they take offense to being outbid by one another.
When I got back into cards maybe 3 years ago, 4SC popped the first one and sold it for around $5K. The board melted down at the price. Looks like a heck of an investment now for that purchaser!

So this is where t mobile got the idea for those "stupid rich" commercials.

What is Probstein's motivation to fake sell a card and have it obviously not go through at a ridiculous amount? All it would do is shine a huge negative light on his consignment business, and he would get little/no money out of it (as the seller would not have motivation to pay Rick his $2k or whatever in fees for a card to NOT sell). If Rick (smartly) doesn't pay out the consignor in advance of receiving payment for the auction, he would truly get nothing out of the auction as he likely would not charge consignor for non-paying bidder.
That is not to say all bidding is legit - it just is to call out being involved does little for Probstein with such an obnoxious auction value.

Would be difficult since there are only 117 PSA 9s listed in pop report and you have to assume quite a few of those are either part of registry sets or already been cracked and resubmitted.

You think they were running around trying to land quality photos of rookie tight ends in the 1970s?
<< <i>I would rather buy a rookie Mantle if I had that much to spend. >>
The guys paying 25K for an Ozzie Newsome are not trading the opportunity to acquire a Mantle for the Newsome. It's not an either/or thing, they likely have no budget when it comes to card purchases.
<< <i>And there are 3 days left. I spent almost $700 years ago on a pop 1 SGC 98 trying to cross (and failed). Any way this is legit and gets paid for?
In the NFL HOC RC registry subculture, this card (flip) is the holy grail of the modern-ish years. There aren't that many cards anymore that can differentiate one collection from another, but this is one of them. 26k is inflated but not that surprising when you're talking about competition at the top of the registry.
I myself have owned a bunch of 9s, cracked and resubmitted never to get back anything better than a 9. Like Burke, I've also stabbed at higher grade non-PSA copies without success, but at least this auction makes me feel like it was a good idea to have tried. This card is consistently riddled with all sorts of problems including vertical centering, fish eyes, registration, etc. To call this one "condition-sensitive" is an understatement.
Congrats to the winner! Nice to have that much disposable cash.
