Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

Be gentle… I'm out of my comfort zone.

A fellow came in the other day who has stage IV cancer. He had a box of "rookie" cards.
I am not into cards. He knew that.
So, I asked him : "What do you have to get for them ? "
He says : " I need forty dollars".
This made me laugh because I wouldn't spend $4 on sports cards, normally.
Still haven't looked through them and honestly pass up card offers every week.
Yet, this was odd to me because …. well you know a guy being sick, and all.
Paid him the $40. I know…. am a sucker for a sad sap.
He said, "You should triple your money". I laughed again.

Thank you for the responses. He (the seller) first called on the phone and I called him "ma'am" so he corrected me. His woman came with him. The tough part of a B&M is the learning curve. Being "helpful" is always my "first and foremost" idea, because it's always what I hoped for when I was young going into places. THough I never expected it would be older gents that actually supported this "hobby" most. And to that end, it's kind of painful seeing people suffer. Just a day in the life, you know ?

On the side : I never once suspected he wasn't sick from his appearance.

I agree with Jay, plus you did a nice think for someone who needed some help I'm sure. I know it's hard for people to realize life isn't all about money.
