Ancient coin NEWP Day 2 (Birytis, Troas AE19 w/ Kabeiros)

circa 4th century BCE

City of Birytis (ancient city we only know of from coins, probably near ancient Troy) in Troas (region in western Asia Minor that is now Çanakkale province in Turkey)

Bronze Æ 19mm

5.4 grams

Obverse: Head of Kabeiros (an underworld mystery cult god comparable to Dionysus)facing left, wearing pileus (a brimless felt cap), stars to left and right

Reverse: BIPY (abreviation of "of the people of Birytis") surrounding what looks like Herakles' (Hercules) club all within wreath

    Oooh, I like it! Nice centering and strike. Given the usual condition and strike for this type, the roughness can be overlooked image.

    a lot of history in these cheap bronzes, sure the patina is stripped and it's porous but great detail remaining image and it didn't cost much
