That is crazy, particularly for that 8.

    I don't see that bumping.

Skinny top border (and maybe the left one too), a touch on the bottom left that would preclude more than a 7 these days, and the ugly black line on the bottom make that the last card to overpay for...

Don (Mariner) sold a beautiful 62 Mantle a couple of years ago when he upgraded... I think it blew away VCP at the time (I think it was a 7) - and deservedly so.

This one, on the other hand.... not my cup of tea.

The 1962 Topps #200 Mantle is very difficult to find in PSA 8 and higher without the typical black cut "guideline"
at the bottom edge of the card (check out the PSA 9 copy that MLI had in their post-National auction last year
which had that line). The wood grain borders also show flaws so easily as well.

Finding that rare copy of a PSA 8 which doesn't show any chipping and is missing that guideline justifies a
premium. This one has minimal chipping, but the corners are definitely 8s and it has the black guideline
    at the bottom.

Not sure what this buyer is thinking, but I am not disappointed (as the guideline-less copy I found at National last year
after a multi-year search cost less than half of this one).

Here is the one I found at National last year (if the one that just sold is worth its price, then what should I ask for this one):

If you want to see a card that really overshot its VCP, take a look at this one from MLI's auction that just ended

Wow that clemente is nuts. Nice card, but not dead centered and you are right, waaayyy over VCP. Always fun to see these results.

That was an amazing price for that card.
I agree it is tough to find without the black bar.

Dave - Looks like the one you found is outstanding and at a great price. Very nice pickup. I am sure over the next couple of weeks we will see some offered on Ebay now that this one has sold for $6500 - always happens.

Once again the real question is, "did someone actually pay for it". on the mantle's, the last 3 or 4 sales have been the consignment people, none by me or another joe blow. When we see joe blow sale it for $4,500, I will start to believe.
Work hard and you will succeed!!

Be interesting to see if prices keep going up on items like Mantles, Clemente's, Aaron's... With the economy being pretty decent still people seem to be wiling to pay for the very nice high end stuff. All Mantles from the 50's seem to be doing well along with certain years from the 60's - later 60's cards still sell but with the inventory not as scarce there is no need for high prices through the roof.
  • I hope my Mantles do well in these few weeks. I consigned my collection to a auction house, that is up and which ends the 21st. . I havent visited this site in a long time and know several other guys under different usernames and from other forums, same as me. I got tired of using Ebay to sell and their fees. I been reading threads here for a while, just never posted i guess.
I love my 51 & 52 and consider them as great investments for long after i am gone. A recent AH had several low-end one that went reasonable prices, before the market hit prices, but people are buying them up and flipping them.
A person, whom is on here, has tremendous eye for centered cards, you know who you are, has taught us that you can get nice centered cards in a lower grade and they will have more better appeal by other that are grades higher.
BTW, I am envious of his 52 Mick, Ruth RC, and several items he has owned.

To each his own, but forget the front for a second. Anyone who bid on that after taking more than a second to look at the back has more money than he needs.

I could understand the price if the card matched the quality of Dave's, but I've been "watching" Mantles, and other HOFers trending well over VCP. Great news if you already own these cards, and are selling. Not so great if you're looking for a bargain. Congrats to the sellers/consigners.

This card went for $6k, while another PSA 9 went for over $10k (including the buyer's premium) in the ML auction:

the 6k has a tilt and a white border with black speckles...the 10k is white clean and sharp but not sure its an extra 4k sharp.. thats an abs crazy price to pay....but who am i to say. based on my buying history it cudda been me easily or a few guys i know.

mantles have been much hotter than hof rc (tho they're hot also)....the last couple months they have dried up and you need to be prepared to pay 20-40% over top vcp. 9s are few and now 8s are disappearing. i was bidding on a 53 mantle that topped out at 15-16 vcp....ended at 25ish i believe.

so what happens...price continues to drive up or people start spilling theirs out for a quick profit....who wins...supply or demand....im still a buyer at these prices....so far.

the National will be a great barometer.....be great if someone just has the mantle basic registry for sale...be nice to pick up a run of mantles 51-69 and be done with it....thatd be an investment portfolio...(just rationalizing for the little lady ha)

....ive seen clemente, williams complete runs for sale but yet to see a mantle run anytime recent.

Was not sure about posting, as people may seem it as a advertisement, but it is Sterlings May7th-21st.
I remember sometime last year where i had a 1970 Clemente sgc 96/9, but it no where sold in the 4 digits. I am amazed at that 80k tag on that 51 Mick.

An Matty, you know who it is. ChrisM. And i love to grab your Gehrig P/C if you ever part ways. Sorry for the username here. It was prior to my drinking days.

This 1962 PSA 8 Mantle sold at Heritage last night for $4780!

And it has the typical black cutting guideline along the bottom.
