What a night, scored some vintage Texas Rangers game used stuff. Some of these guys are relatively no namers in our grand hobby and there are probably a couple you've never heard of like Howell and Zisk, but when I was a boy, the Rangers were pure joy to me. My dad used to take me up to the games and we'd have the best times. Great memories. I usually don't display my stuff in my home, but I'm going to get me a bat rack and throw these puppies up. I likely paid a lot more than I should have for "commons", but these guys weren't commons to me. This is one of my most exciting hobby nights in a LONG time. My wife, who is normally VERY tolerant and supportive of my hobby habit was looking at me like I was crazy for buying these bats LOL
My favorite all time player Jim Sundberg. I FINALLY got one of his bats.
Next up is the Rangers' first ever draft pick. Roy Howell. And a 1976 Bicentennial bat to boot.
Next to Sunny, a lot of my Rangers hopes hinged on the play of this guy. Buddy Bell.
This guy was known as the Big O. Al Oliver.
I always thought this guy was clutch. Richie Zisk.
This guy was part of the hated Yankees (who were hated because they were good LOL), he came and played in the 79 season for Texas and was part of the crew that wore the Rangers funky shade of blue. Plus he had great hair on some mid 70's baseball cards. Oscar Gamble.
Next up is another ex-Yankee, who played a couple seasons for Texas in the early 80's and even returned years later to coach. Bucky Dent.
Finally, a game worn undershirt from the great 80's Ranger, Pete O'Brien

You are right about Scoop, but my dad and I called him the Big O because of his jersey number and last name

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
at least semi-stars and not commons. Very nice stuff and a great trip down memory lane.
Congrats

<< <i>Being a big fan of the game during the time period these guys played I am familiar with all of them. I think they can all be elevated to

+1. So glad to see you land these, as I know how much Sunny means to you. I also really enjoyed the post where you and your daughter got your photo taken with him. Extremely cool.
Congrats!

That's quite a haul!
I'd like a Dent bat from the '77 or '78 season.
I picked up a Jim Lonborg GU as a coach in a Yankee home uni - I wanted a home Yanks uni.
Congratulations on your pickups and thanx for sharing; glad you finally got a Sunbert bat.
There are about 6 or 7 more bats that I will probably pick up from him as well and I'm interested to see what else is in the collection. I'll be like a kid in a candy store.
While I have a TON of Rangers autographed items from 1972 to current, I didn't have much game used stuff except for recent stuff that Maven and I got of Nelson Cruz, but I think I'm about to have a whole bunch of the guys I grew up watching

I think it was Mike on American Pickers that said "the best time to buy something is when you see it." I hope you can pick up a lot of good stuff.
Will have to stop by the atm on the way to work LOL

The highlights from today's haul are a Sundberg undershirt and a fantastic sign from Arlington Stadium. Great stuff to me!!!!
Jim Sundberg undershirt. Over the years I've seen a couple Sundberg game used items, and they've been cut off like this, he must have had a quirk of not liking the tails for some reason.
Lee Mazzilli bat. He only played one season with Texas in the early 80's if I remember correctly. Was a decent hitter.
Nelson Norman bat. This guy used to make me so mad because he had zero power and not too good with the stick either generally.
The G Man, George Wright, I remember this guy having a ton of energy.
Kurt Bevaqua
Billy Sample
Wayne Nordhagen
Johnny Grubb
Len Randle (Bicentennial) one of the original Rangers
Sunny's backup catcher Dave Roberts
Mario Mendoza of the Mendoza Line fame LOL
and an absolutely fantastic sign from old Arlington Stadium
and I don't remember this guy ever being a Rangers coach, but I very well might be wrong, but this was in the group so I bought it too.
Gates Brown fungo bat. I remember him as a Detroit Tiger but who knows, I WAS a kid back then LOL

<< <i>GREAT Pickups Mike; Was 1976 the year that Lenny Randle punched Frank Lucchessi?
IMF >>
Bill, I THINK that was 77 but I'd have to look it up to make sure. I don't think Randle ever played again for Texas after that.

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

lol, she hasn't seen the 2nd batch yet or most of the first batch as the guy came to my office. She has seen the Sundberg though as I've been carrying it around all day doing an occasional slow motion swing. BEST addition to my collection in a long time. We'll see if I get to bring it into my son's honor society induction tonight lol
She gets to go on enough family vacations and fun things because of my buying/selling of autographs and other items so she never minds when I buy something to hold. She knows I'm a kid at heart and has come to accept it. She does think it's kinda strange though that I'm lugging this bat around
I don't think he was ever with the Rangers either. If he was, it would have been in 1976 or 1977. He played only for the Tigers, retiring in 1975. In 1978, he became the hitting coach for the Tigers before completely retiring in 1984.
I must ask, however, where's your MICK bat? Mickey Rivers, that is. And what about Pat Putnam? Or Mike Richardt? Dave Hostetler, anyone?
And I totally concur with you regarding Norman. Zero pop came out of that bat you own, lol. In fact, I'm not sure that dude ever hit a dinger in the majors.
I thoroughly enjoyed this -- thanks for sharing!
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
<< <i>Mike, this brings back some serious memories. I, too, went to a number of Rangers games as a youth during this same time period.

The family that's selling through the guy I met on Ebay actually has a Mickey bat. I told them Sunday I wanted that one too, but when they got delivered today, I was informed that's the one they decided to keep. Didn't see any Putnam stuff or I definitely would have snagged one of those. Speaking of Richardt, he was batting when my dad got me the one foul ball we ever got at a game. I need to find that ball, it had special reverence from me for a number of years until I went off to college, it's probably in a box somewhere. Big Hoss usually shows up on Opening Day. I don't know if you know or not, but if you want to meet and get pics with a lot of the guys from our generation, go on Opening Day and enter the 1st base gate. Get there early and the old players congregate just to the right in the area behind the inclined ramps right where you walk in. They all seem to enjoy being recognized and I've never been turned down by any of them when asking for pictures and most of them even say thanks when you shake their hand. Some of them are VERY hard to recognize but they all generally have a jersey on and have their name on the back so that makes it a LOT easier LOL. My daughter Maven after we meet them will burst my bubble sometimes because she'll say something like "dad, that guy you said was greatness is old and fat like you" LOL, out of the mouths of babes I try to tell her that God willing, we all get old someday.
You still live down here? If so, holler sometime this Summer and we'll catch a game together and talk Rangers.

...The Expos stadium (Olympic Stadium) in Montreal was nicknamed The Big O when Al Oliver played for them.
