Is it just me or does that gum seem too small for 1972?

i just dug up the wrapper and gum from a series 5/6 pack i opened a while back...the gum is indeed a different size....any thoughts/comments on this? all of the cards in the pack look totally untouched and the star card is in great shape

It is. Late 80s gum for sure. Resealers will often add one decent card to add credibility to the pack. Topps never used that size gum in 1972, period.

Another whiff by GAI. Can anyone tell if this is from the Rutter era?

The cert # on the back would be the indicator, as the Rutter era coincided with the 102XXX cert numbers.

I've opened many GAI graded packs over the years, and the vast majority of GAI packs are perfectly authentic, particularly those in the silver flips, but there are exceptions. No one is perfect, though gum size for a particular year or issiue is a pretty good initial indicator for authenticity.

glad i didnt pay an exceptional amount for these....thanks guys for pointing this out...i thought the gum was small for 72....whoever put it together actually did a good job aside from the gum

if the perez grades a 9(has a decent shot) then i almost break even

Agreed. The one other red flag is that all of the other cards in the pack are similarly cut and centered, except for the Perez. If that card grades highly, it won't be a total loss, though top right corner looks a bit soft. Good luck if you decide to submit it, Phillip.

I opened boxes of packs in '72, and never got a mixed series pack. Sure wish I had, hated waiting for the next series and was so happy in '74 when they eliminated series altogether.

The gum is definitely wrong in that pack.
Did Ryan Rutter ever get anything right?

Do you have a back scan of the pack by any chance?

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Also thought it was odd that every card has a tilt except the Perez.

EDIT: Guess I should have read the other comments before replying image

Phillip, did you by any chance scan the back of the pack itself (either inside or outside holder) before you opened it??

It would be interesting to see what the back looked like and to see the seal and corner folds and if they looked suspect. (because the front of it looks pretty good).

I bought a 1972 3rd series box several years ago and opened a handful of the packs. I did get a handful of 4th series cards mixed in. The box was definitely legit as I bought it in a run from 1972-76 where many of the packs had stars showing.

There are legitimate mixed series packs from this era~Series 5/6 for 72 is another one you see and I've had Series 1/2 packs from 1973 that were also authentic. In 1970, there were also Series 5/6/7 packs.

One wonders why mixed series packs weren't the norm after the first series. Seems like a good way to make sure you sell through the earlier series and give people a better chance to complete their set.

One speculative reason I heard that makes sense is they would include a handful of the next series cards to get kids started on that series with the hopes they will want to complete it when the series is officially issued

The next series checklist was always part of the previous series. But why not include both 1sts and 2nds once the 2nd series comes out? Was the feeling that people were done with the old series and only wanted the new?

I would assume this is correct. Who wants "old" series cards when the new ones came out? The checklist was the teaser to whet the appetite.
