Poppage: The Screws Have Once Again Tightened - Latest Sub Results Posted and Much Better

After a brief respite, the grader of death has once again reared his/her ugly head. Some of these will have to get cracked and resubbed during a more friendly period of time. All cards were purchased raw as NM-MT from reputable sellers and passed my inspection criteria. On the positive side, this and another sub from mid-month popped very quickly. However, I'd rather they take their time and get them right. I'll post some scans of the head scratchers when they arrive.

I feel your pain. Very quick turnarounds but grades are harsh.

    Thanks,

I can sadly say that I have had 4 subs this month that were all hammered! All of my crack outs that I felt were undergraded or had a shot at a bump came back with even lower grades than the original. What fun!!

I still chuckle at the "EVIDENCE" of Trimming Grade. I would think that since we are paying for that, we should get what the exact evidence is

Time to take a little break from grading.

Am I missing something about this submission? Did you scan cards previously for other members to call PSA 8's on 1956 - 1959 "harsh"? I have no idea what you were expecting, but those seem like pretty good grades for vintage cards.

Agree with Lightning, there are some fine grades there Gem! 59's are tough 8's, for that matter so are 57's, and you have quite a few. Can't wait to see scans. I'm guessing the 6's and 7's are disappointing?

I agree with Tom. If this were one of your 1970s subs, John, I'd agree that you got hammered, but 20 out of 50 PSA 8 or better for 1950s cards actually seems pretty impressive, closer to the G.O.L. than the G.O.D., lol.

I guess it's a matter of perspective. These were high end cards that I paid strong prices to obtain. They also appear stronger than many of the 8s I'm seeing on eBay. I can't tell you how many PSA 8 1956's I pass up on eBay because the corners are visible rounded. I'll post some scans of the stronger cards that were graded low to get your opinions.

On my 1960+ sub, I also got hit pretty hard. The most frustrating one was a mint looking 1969 Dave Duncan, a tough card. The first time I subbed it, it got rejected for min size. When I got it back, I sized it up it measured perfectly to full size cards. So I resubbed it. This time they holdered it but they graded it a seven. No way that card is anything less than an 8. Here's that sub...

without knowing any better, i couldn't imagine you sending in a '69T Jesus Alou for the pleasure of owning a NM 7 when a GEM MINT 10 could be had for barely more than the price of a street vendors hot dog and a Coke.

condolences on the wipeouts. looks like they are really scrutinizing everything extra carefully now.

Yep, I know the 1969s well having submitted a few thousand over the years. The first series high pop cards I submitted were easy 9s in my mind. I was hoping to hit a 10 to make it worth my while. I guess getting three 1969 10s on my previous sub got me over confident to try on those. When you're getting 7s on cards that are screamers, you know there's something wrong. No way two or more graders are looking at those.

I think a grader looking at the new shiny stuff has been thrown to the normal cardboard side and is having a hard time identifying a GEM from that era.

    Thanks,

I think this is a real possibility
I've heard from more than one source that the better grades on vintage cards come from the more experienced vintage graders, who know the characteristics of older cards and don't compare them to the shiny plastic modern stuff.

As promised here are some scans of the particularly harsh grades. All cards were closely screened for surface defects before submitting. It's possible I missed them on a card...maybe one. I'd be interested in everyone's comments. Maybe I'm getting blind in my old age and missed obvious flaws.

First up, 1981 Joe Morgan. The only reason I subbed it is because it had 10 potential. I guess not.

    image
    image

Next up, 1973 Rookies. Was expecting at least an 8.

    image
    image

Next up, PSA 5 1965 SO Leaders.

    image
    image

Next up, PSA 6 1965 common.

    image
    image

Next up, PSA 7 1975 Staub. Centering is very similar to my PSA 9 example.

1969 Bernie Allen. Would be a 9 any other day of the week.

    1969 Maury Wills.

    1969 Dave Duncan.

The Rusty Staub has a large pink print dot in the left border and a touched corners. I also see a similar pink print dot in the right border too.

What grade were you expecting on this one?

On the 1965 Topps SO Leaders did you miss a wrinkle by chance? The only thing I can think that would bring it down to a PSA 5.

The Joe Morgan looks really solid in the scan. Maybe harsh on the surface in the blue area?

The 69s so seem strong for the grade unless we're missing something on the surfaces, but I'd also grade the Morgan an 8 (maybe 8.5) and the Staub is accurately graded as a 7 imo with that centering and registration issues.

Thanks for the feedback Dan. I have a lot of 1975 PSA 9s with Fisheyes. Though I don't prefer those cards myself, PSA has historically not downgraded for it. This is my PSA 9 Singleton and not the only one with this Fisheye out on the market.

Crazy how those new PSA holograms don't really show up very well in a scan.

After seeing that I guess those two pink issues are not really that bad.

The centering on the Staub looks like 65/35 and the upper right corner looks touched.

I have never graded a 1975 Topps card so perhaps someone else can chime in.

The 1965 common looks stronger then a PSA 6 to me. You can see a little corner weakness on the reverse but in the scans I would think it would be graded higher. I have cracked out a few cards that I thought looked much stronger then PSA 6's that I have subbed and they had deflated corners that look much worse under heavy light. Maybe that is the case here.

The hard part about the crack and sub game now is the new PSA holder. So tough to crack.

The Singleton has low eye appeal for a 9 with that fisheye but is cleaner and better centered than the Staub (and corners are not as touched).

If I were submitting that Staub, I would not expect better than an 8 at best.

There are always going to be isolated examples to justify a higher grade on a partucular card, but I don't believe that using a card with lower eye appeal should be the measuring stick to argue that a card should have received a higher grade

the 69s hide flaws very well. my loupe gets a workout when viewing cards from that issue. John, you know i've had my hands on a pile of these once or twice. they've thrown me strange curves in the past as well, but a good history of success overall. the Duncan resembles the best raw example i'd ever been able to find which was an 8 and the focus was a little bit sharper. my guess is the focus shift would explain your 7.

the tweeners don't seem to be getting the love in a few of the other examples you've posted.

Do you think the centering on the back of some of the cards swayed them toward a lower grade? Maybe they are focusing on the backs more now. Nice looking cards. Doug

Just got my 144 card sub grades today. I'm glad I split it the way I did because this one was much more favorable. Will post grades tonight.

It seems the headscratcher 5s can be explained away with the dreaded surface wrinkle. I'm puzzled by the seemingly bizarre PSA 6s. I'm looking at that 65 Griffith. I believe I heard someone say that these mystery 6s are due to a surface wrinkle on the back of the card. Can anyone else confirm this?

Tim, just curious what you see with the registration issues. I agree centering is not ideal but is good enough for an 8. That one was not a 9 candidate in my view but a pretty solid 8.

Okay, here's my 144 card sub that was dropped off at the same time as the 100 card sub I got hammered on. This one was much better and was from the same inventory stock as the 100 card sub. It definitely seems the results depend heavily on who's grading the cards. Much happier with this one. Glad I loaded more cards on this sub rather on the 100 card sub.

<< <i>The 69s so seem strong for the grade unless we're missing something on the surfaces, but I'd also grade the Morgan an 8 (maybe 8.5) and the Staub is accurately graded as a 7 imo with that centering and registration issues. >>

Tim, just curious what you see with the registration issues. I agree centering is not ideal but is good enough for an 8. That one was not a 9 candidate in my view but a pretty solid 8. >>

Two fisheyes~a larger pink one which is tougher to see because of the colored border and a smaller yellow one below it. I think the combination of those defects and the centering are what relegated the card to a NM 7 grade, though I could see it in a 7.5 holder.

Regardless of that, though, John, your second sub more than makes up for it~congrats! You should edit the title, as the screws have now been loosened again, lol..

Yeah I'm happy but how do you predict what a card will grade with this variability? I guess the key is to just continue to break subs up to increase the odds that the grader of death won't get them all.

You've been grading cards long enough to realize that as long as human beings are doing the grading there will be some inherent variability. The idea that grading criteria is now tougher than before is a concept that comes up every now and then here, typically after a disappointing sub, but a superb sub like the second one illustrates that is really not the case.

This is exactly why I break my subs up into several small ones a month.
