Question about shipping higher value coins sold on eBay via USPS Express Mail...

RaufusRaufus Posts: 6,836 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hey folks,

I've once again run into the following issue. I would appreciate any help with this....

When I ship a higher value coin which I sold on eBay via USPS Express Mail the postal clerk generally tells me that one can't use Signature Confirmation as is required by PayPal for items over $750. They tell me that I'm already going to get a signature on an insured Express Mail package for which I check the signature required box. I'm sure that one would be required regardless with that level of insurance. I tell them that I know this however the actual Signature Confirmation service is required. They generally tell me that this is not possible. I then have to go to the Main Post Office which is a drive and they somehow do it.

I must be missing something here. How do those of you who ship higher value coins sold on eBay via USPS Express Mail handle this?

Not that it matters, but I just don't understand why PP insists on Sig. Conf. as opposed to a signature such as is required to accept an insured Express Mail package.

Thanks for any advice!

I believe your express tracking number will allow you to see a PDF of the signature on line. This will satisfy ebay and paypal's requirement for a signature.

For items over $700 I ship USPS registered mail and buy the purchase electronic receipt at the counter. If you item is considered bullion by USPS they will only pay out an insurance claim if it was sent registered.

They have to sign for Express Mail so you are getting signature confirmation. It is included for free with that service.

Getting the signature is half the battle. To satisfy EB/PP requirement, USPS also has to show it was obtained when viewing tracking info.

Thanks very much to you both for your replies.

Does the signature on Express Mail satisfy the PP requirement? If it does than this would be great. This would make sense. I thought that it specifically HAD to be Sig. Conf.

This was a PCGS Slabbed Spouse, not straight bullion. I only ship bullion registered.

I hate shipping Express for this very reason. I only do when specifically requested by the buyer.

In this instance, I advertised Priority or Registered as I usually do. However, when I checked the buyers feedback left I noted that he left negs for several sellers who apparently delivered the correct items but not fast enough for this buyer's tastes. Having worked very hard and managed to keep my 100% Post FB for all of these years of selling coins on eBay I gave him a complimentary Express Mail upgrade to be on the safe side. He really is very tough with feedback. He's never sold anything - typical for someone who leaves negs so easily - thus he has 100% pos fb.

The things that we do for tough buyers to keep our pos feedback coming. I get some sort of perverse satisfaction in trying to exceed even problem buyers expectations to see how good of feedback that I can get from them even if it costs me as it did here. It's like some kind of challenge. Pretty crazy how many contortions that eBay's progressively more seller-hostile policies force us to endure.

    Anyway thanks for the advice!

Yes it does. I have used it dozens of times for eBay sales and I have never had an issue.

The new forms need a check in a box to get a signature.

Don't forget to check that box

Indeed. I'm glad that I caught that - easy to miss.

For an insured package would they not require a signature even if one forgot to check the box.

You should purchase your express mail shipping through ebay. There is a hefty discount and signature confirmation is free. I say this because that would remove any concern you have about ebay not accepting signature confirmation with express mail. It is cheaper than registered mail through ebay!

You can only insure up to $600 online, unless there is some other link in eBay other than Paypal shipping.

Please post his eBay ID so I can block him.

The only time that I let an ebay buyer talk me into overnight express mail in lieu of my advertised registered mail, a claim was filed within four days of unauthorized credit card use. Had I shipped registered as planned I would have been able to recall the shipment before it got delivered. It was a $2800 sale and back then Paypal protected me. PP no longer offers guaranteed protection with CC charge backs and I no longer will ship a high dollar item to an ebay buyer overnight.

Man, derryb, that sounds like a close call.

Thanks very much for all of the great info. It's very much appreciated.

I'll post the buyers ID as soon as the transaction is totally completed so you all can judge for yourselves as to whether or not you'd like to block him.

I just think that leaving a seller a neut or esp a neg for receiving an as advertised item a bit later than expected is unacceptable. I've received items late countless times. Leaving even neutral feedback on those grounds alone never crossed my mind.

In fact, the only time I ever left non-positive feedback was twice for items which were never delivered and about which the seller never replied.

I've not left FB at all a few times.

Agreed. The guy is a total a**hole and will make a fine addition to my blocked bidder list.

This is absolutely wrong! If you are shipping through ebay it defaults to eBay's insurance. And if you read the terms of eBay's insurance it does not cover coins! You have to chose USPS insurance and then you can insure up to $5000!

Careful! By default, it is NOT included, although they don't charge you to add it. This is a recent change in their policy in which you had to explicitly waive signature.
