So, a funny thing happened on my way to browse cheap Roman silver... (Nick, you'll like this)

I'm having fun with my Box of 20 set, but as ever before, whenever my primary collection starts getting expensive, I find myself itching to start a sideline collection, for some "good cheap fun". Last night I was thinking it might be fun to shop cheap Roman silver, since one can often find nice denarii and antoninianii for under fifty bucks.

But when I did an eBay search with the keyword "denarius", a lot of nicely toned Hungarian denars came up. They were within twelve hours of closing and most still had one-figure prices. Furthermore, many of the coins from this one Slovenian seller looked to be from an old collection and had attractive cabinet toning.

So I set my snipes and ended up winning all but three of the ones I had bid on. Got several for less than ten dollars apiece, too, and only a few crossed the $20.00 threshold. One I really had to stretch for... it went for $26.00! (Ooh... ouch! LOL)

Last fall I had talked about starting a date set of these but got cold feet when I didn't find any I really liked for the price. It seems that has changed, and so now here I go, with my "starter" set. I know after my last discussion, Nick started a collection of these. (Nick, it seems I ended up with an extra 1580 in my bidding frenzy, so if you need that date, let me know. You can't have the "monster toner", though!)

I think one thing that kept prices down was that the seller had a $10.00 shipping fee. However, since they combine lots, I only had to pay that once and shipping ended up costing me only about 55 cents per coin.

I'm pretty happy with the results. image

UPDATE: Now have these up on Photobucket, though my collection index thread for them is as yet under construction. (Actually, they might be easier to view in the slideshow.)

    << <i>Buy em all. >>

I did! Those are the auction closing prices.

I did get outbid on three not shown above. Also won a small lot of Italian coins from the same seller, nice n' cheap.

Most would probably go VF. A few of the better ones XF. Might be an AU in the mix.

Hmm, by the saying "Nick, you'll like this," I think you meant, "Nick, you just got sniped." Haha. I think if you look at the bidding history, I think I did throw out a couple of feeler bids on at least a coin or two because when I came along and saw those coins, I believe there was already at least one bid on each auction and I had no idea how high the other bidders were willing to go. (I'm nicholasz219 on the bay too so see if I was underbidder on any of your lots.) I also have a spending restriction on right now because Fiona's birthday is in a few weeks and apparently she still likes birthday parties at places you can bring 20 of your friends to jump on trampolines for an afternoon. Also, she apparently still likes presents. *sigh* Plus I did go a bit bananas with some extra money in the last few months and have a coin purchase I am saving for besides. So you lucked out because had I not had her birthday, we would have been in full blown warfare for those coins. I do not use sniping software mostly because I'm kind of dumb about it and my one test try of it really did not work out. I am guessing that I should learn to use it because yesterday I lost a coin by .01 which angered me to high heaven.

What I am saying is that you got a crap ton of awesome coins and at awesome prices fully within my $10/coin range for this set. (Averaging for multiple buys from same seller with combined shipping allows me to cheat the $10 rule a little even though I have to spend more money overall to get to that price point.) The toning on these coins is exceptional; so exceptional that I wondered if they were artificially toned or if I should just be leery in general.

I can not, in the end, be mad at LM for grabbing all of these coins. When he mentioned his interest in these last year, I remembered buying a few for an ex of mine of Hungarian descent that all got lost to me in the break up. So I started a collection. So since I sniped his idea, it is only fair he sniped it back along with a great collection of 18 coins.

Great job. That 1527 is really nice. I would say the 1516 is a close second and the 1520 really pops with the dark toning on the collar and silver background by the shield.

That's a heck of a mini-collection for the price! Any time a coin costs less than a pizza and is older than our country, it's worth buying image

Duplicate post, edited for more feedback! 1527 and 1516 are definitely my favorites, although 1519 and 1525 are also great. An excellent collection!

Actually my first thought upon seeing them was to PM you, but since there were only a few hours left by that time and I didn't think you'd get the heads-up in time, I thought I'd give 'em a go.

Wondered 'bout that. Kinda thought maybe your birthday was February 19th or something.

Oh- back to the OP- I haven't built the collection thread for these yet, but now have a Photobucket album for them, if anybody is interested enough to see bigger pix and both sides. A lot of them look VERY nice for what I paid, IMHO.

The slideshow might be easier to view than the album, now that Photobucket clutters up so much of the page with ads and extraneous crap.
