Subbing Question

I've come across a few threads that mention subbing similar cards (i.e., same card, same year/issue) separately. I'm curious as to what the logic is behind this? My impression is that all cards submitted go through a process of de-identification so when they actually reach the grader there would be no way he would know they had been submitted together. I suppose if one comes right after the other it would tip him off, but that assumes all cards in the submission are graded by the same individual -- something I wasn't clear on either. Any insight appreciated!

I think it's more physchological but I asked this once before and I think it came down to getting a grader in a bad mood the day you submitted seven of the same card and got 7's and 8's back. There were mixed responses in regards to the thought process for submitting multiples of the same card.
  • The sentiment you're mentioning borders on superstition. It follows a logic that graders "want to give out only a limited number of high grades" and "might cut you a break if you get a few 9s and bump one to a 10". This is basically the Gambler's Fallacy and, in my opinion, there has never been evidence supporting it. It's all anecdotal anyway, but I've seen plenty of consecutive subs go "10-10-10-10....". I think you're equally likely to get optimal grades however you choose to sub the cards and it's cheapest to send them all together, so that's usually the best plan.
  • The Grader of Doom thesis also works the other way. What if you *were* going to send all the cards in to the "Good Grader", but chose to split them up and ended up sending the 2nd half to the G-O-D? It's all unknown, even presuming either exists (and they probably don't).
  • I give. An actual point, choice, decision, vote, or any sense of anything, exists in the above two replies, where ?t

I do believe there are certain cards PSA flags in their system and the pop report is evidence of this.

    Conclusive evidence? No.

But when there are only six PSA 10 Sakic Topps rookies out of almost 800 submission, I can't think of any other way to control numbers like that than to flag the card and over-scrutinize it.

I think it is really more superstition then anything. These results were from a sub I sent in and you can see you can hit multiples of 10's in a row of the same card.

I do believe some cards are indeed more scrutinized when they are submitted, but I think you will that a lot of these same cards are heavily doctored or fake and require more scrutiny.

  • I agree that there are certain cards that PSA is tougher on.

But, they're *universally* tougher on them - it doesn't vary grader-by-grader and you aren't more likely to get higher or lower grades if you split those cards between subs.
