1965 Pete Rose PSA 8

I recently purchased this card for what I felt was a great price. Given the early holder, I'm curious to hear whether you guys think the grade would stand up to today's standards. Note that the white area above the R in Rose is an artifact (probably a shadow); the same is true on the back of the card below the left front tire of the VW.

Wow that is an old slab. Even the hologram has some wear and tear.
Something really weird going on with the card's upper right corner, maybe a factory miscut.
I'm guessing if it was graded today it would get an MC.
    I'd get it reholdered.

Something is up about the top and bottom. TRY and get that card put in a new holder. Make sure it has not been cracked and replaced.

Nice card - reholder, don't crack though.

I echo the "don't crack" comments. The top looks fishy.

nice card , looks terrible in the holder. get it reholdered and the card will show correctly. the upper right has a bit of a batear but within standards. nice side to side centering and image quality. top to bottom centering is not to bad.

the one thing I don't like is the chipping on the back of the upper right corner where the batear is which makes me wonder if it is factory

there is an angular area at the lower left front which appears to be lightly stained and a similarly discolored area at the lower right reverse, however, this is where having something in the form of a magnification tool would help to confirm this suspicion with the card in hand. you might want to take a closer look.

personally, i'd feel less than confident owning this card.
  • Crack and resub and you will get an EOT or at best, a PSA 6.

Has PSA ever been known to, under certain circumstances, refused to reholder cards in older slabs like this if they don't feel the card lives up to their standards nowadays? I have always been curious about that. I have never had to reholder anything to this point. Something like the card shown above, that was probably slabbed in the 90's, could they possibly not reholder it due to their stricter standards, or do they have to honor the grade? I'm sure, as graders aren't perfect, that certain things can be missed and mistakes can happen, not saying that's the case with the card above just generally speaking.

yes, psa will buy a card back. I don't think they randomly do it on reholders without a review to be requested.

as for this card , after looking at all the psa 8's that have sold through VCP , I can't say this is any worse than the others and is probably nicer than 1/2 of the 8's that have sold. is the color that off in person? looks like yourt scanner sucks and blowing the card up to 3 times the size doesn't help

Thanks for the input guys, I think will definitely have it reholdered. To answer the last post -- it is likely the scanner.. I resorted to using a scan app on my phone for the photos as my actual scanner was producing images that did not come out clear.

It does look like an odd or short cut. It reminds me of the 1975 minis, where you always have to look at top bottom to see if it's short. This one does look short, but beautiful card regardless. Definitely in desperate need of a new holder.

Top of card seems to have curve to it??

Looks like an EOT with that top cut. That's what I'd imagine a scissor cut would look like.

I agree with Duncan~the card looks fine to me. These threads generally turn everyone into the G.O.D. I don't care for the chipping on the top reverse and the borrom right corner on the back, but I've certainly seen worse PSA 8s.

I laughed out loud on that one!

About the '65,please keep us informed on what PSA does. Very interesting!

  • My opinion only. The top looks like it was cut with scissors as someone mentioned earlier. It's a bit round on the top when looking at it from the back scan. It looks a bit rough for an 8 I feel and personally, I would have passed on this one. It's not to say it's not good but I wouldn't have picked it up - even at a great price. If you're happy with it, then that's all that matters.

I can't see that kind of chipping and edge wear on top of back of card f it was trimmed or cut. I think it's just the effect of the pic.
