Picture from NY Times shows another angle for 1973 Topps Mays

Saw this photo while looking at the NY Times website today (article about ARod approaching 660 HRs)

and it reminded me of the 1973 Topps Willie Mays.

It appears that the NY Times photo was taken at the exact moment as the Topps photo but of course at a different angle.

Wish the Topps had the picture quality of the other photo!

looks like at least one more angle exists with the guy who captured a pic of Say Hey's caboose.

Top picture, bat appears that it is touching his jersey? Bottom hand seems that it is closer or on the knob of the bat on the top image.

Not so sure. His card shows the tarp on the infield.

Looks the same to me, down to the shadow over his bat. Although it looks like you can see part of the first base coach box near 2 o'clock on the position circle of the card and in the other one the box is much farther away. I'm way more interested in finding out this answer than I should be.

That appears to be a small tarp that they put in front of home plate during batting practice. Like this...

Agreed, and I don't think it would be visible based on the angle of the top picture.

I'm not too familiar with the Shea Stadium layout, but the '73 card looks to have minimal bleachers in the outfield. It looks pretty much like a fence and that's it - was Shea like that?

It looks more like a spring training field in the background of the card picture.

Wow...that's really cool. the NY Time photo makes the image look so much more current than the Topps card. I think the Topps card photo was taken a fraction of a second before/after the NY Times photo. The placement of fingers, the angle of the dark area of the bat, the ripples in the sleeves of shirt (especially the left arm), the shadow on the neck and left sleeve. It all lines up.

The distance of the bat from the shoulder is the hardest thing to figure out but I'm guessing it's just the angle of the NY Times photo.

An image of Shea Stadium from the era. Looks like the background of the Topps card is accurate.

Although Citi Field is nice and all, I miss Shea a lot. I do not however miss Chipper "Larry" Jones at all. Can you believe the Mets are 11-3?
Love '83 Topps. Looking to put together a PSA 10 set.

Just a few frames difference there and yes the Times photo has so much more color saturation. It also looks like the Topps photog used a flash to offset shadows. Cool item. Doug

This is awesome. Good grab. This can easily be the same shoot for his card.
