Junk wax rips! -- UPDATED 8/11 with Scans of Poppage!!

Well, I have neither the budget nor the cajones to do some of the vintage rips a lot of the guys do here. I have been lucky to put together a pretty decent unopened vintage collection. Along the way, I have also added a number of fun junk wax boxes with the plan to open them at some point. Well, the time has finally come to actually bust some of this junk and hopefully find some gems. I will try and post pics and scans along the way. Here is a pic of my "junk wax" box. Somewhere in there lies 3-88 Topps FB wax boxes, three or four 89 Pro Set II FB boxes, 3-89 Donruss Wax boxes and 1-89 Fleer BB Rack box. There was a recent thread talking about what everyone's favorite junk wax boxes are. Well these are mine.

First up, a 1988 Topps FB Wax Box. I picked up three of these guys from BST a while back. Hoping to find a gem Bo RC in here and it will be fun to pull some of my favorite 49ers:

Good luck. I've ripped all of those issues in the past year. Got 4 Bo's out of 2 88 boxes, 3 are nice, maybe 9s at best and 1 has a gum stain. The collation on the pro set drives me nuts, though. How can I get 5-6 Tony Mandarich cards in every box but at most 2 (usually 1) of any of the HOF rookies? Also, let me know how many Gizmo Williams cards you get. My record is 9.

One box in and this is my sentiment exactly. Super fun to rip and it is still fun every time I pull a Bo Jackson or a 49er (Rice and Montana have multiple cards so this is a sweet set)

Have fun Steve. Hope you get some nice Bo's!!!
Thanks Steven. I did ok with the first box. 2 Bo's! Unfortunately, the first big card out of the box was a Bo RC, but it was the gum card. The gum in this box was pretty tough, it bled through most of the first card and in some cases got the next card in the pack. Here's the first group of scans, including the Bo gum card. I am posting my 49er cards because it's my thread. Just in case Dan shows up on the thread I tossed in an Andre Tippet scan.

More 49er's and the front of that Bo gum card.

This was the nice Bo that I pulled in the first box. It is really well centered and the edges and corners are pretty good too. Only issue is the printing around the borders. Any idea on how PSA grades that sort of thing? If it could get a 9 I would still sub the card. Probably not worth sending in for an 8 though. Curious on opinions on the Bo for possible grading.

Congrats Steve on the Bo! I don't know enough about football to give an opinion on grading and value, but I can say that Bo looks very nice and I would personally send it in for grading just to keep in my personal collection as a nicely centered/good eye-appeal self pull.

Love the 1988 Football. BBCE had some 88s a few months ago but sold out before I could get some. Hoping to pickup some the next time he finds a stash.

    Keep sharing!

While I cant condone such activityimage I can appreciate your taste. I love 88 FBimage

As a matter of fact, 1 of my boxes is ripped. If you could see it in your heart to help a feller out, I
could forgive you for destroying that box of packs.image

As far as to Bo, I dont know how tough PSA is on print defects on this issue. I can tell you its pretty common
in 88, well, most of the 80's as a matter of fact. If I pulled it, I would grade it!
I dont wanna grow up, Im a Toys-R-Us kid!
  • Don't forget about Chris Doleman. PSA 10s sell for $25-30

Thanks for the replies guys. Patrick, I may send in the Bo, we will see. I am hoping to get a gem one in one of my next two boxes. Day off today so lots of ripping to be done.

Chiefsfan--I am an unopened guy for sure. Do you need an empty 88 box? I'm afraid my boxes are all in pretty rough shape. They would probably grade a 1 or 2 on a PSA scale. If you want any I can send you pics and you are welcome to them.

Timpatg--all the Dolemans were in pretty rough shape. Any other cards in the set worth keeping an eye out for?

    Next up 89 Donruss!

Struck out on Griffey, but I did pull some Big Unit RC's (love the Rated Rookie), a nice Biggio and a couple Schillings. Will Clark was my favorite player in any sport growing up and Greg Maddux was my favorite pitcher. I should have paid more attention as one of the Randy Johnson RC's and one of the Curt Schilling RC's were showing on the bottom of the pack. I don't know if anyone collects 89 Donruss unopened packs with stars showing but I suppose they would have been better off in the pack. Now I have a couple of wax stained RC's.

Now this was the most fun break yet. I remember these boxes being awesome to rip back in the day and the first box did not disappoint. I love me some 1989 Pro Set Series II. Star HOF RC's... check, funky card design with various colors... check, crazy collation so you can hit multiples of star RC's in one box... check (I even pulled two of the same card in the same pack twice, I remember this happening when the product first came out and it is still awesome now--for the record the cards I got two of in the same pack were CFL star Gizmo Williams and Bills star Don Beebe). This lot of Pro Set II boxes are all from a BBCE ebay auction I won last year.
    image

Does anyone remember who all the HOF RC's are in this set? Not pictured for space reasons is Dermonti Dawson as well as Cris Carter (I forgot this was his RC). Back in the day I invested in a 50 card lot of Thurman Thomas RC's. I was supposed to retire on those. I wonder where those went. I pulled two Thomas RC's, I forgot that the way the sequence works in these packs, Barry Sanders follows Thurman Thomas depending on where they fall in the pack. So not only did they share a college backfield but they seem to generally share space in packs of Pro Set. I am very happy with my first box of Pro Set, I can only hope the rest of the boxes follow suit with this one. 3 Barry RC's, one that I may send in for grading. I got shut out on Aikman and I thought I was going to miss out on Prime Time too, but Deion made his appearance in the second to last pack of the box. Always nice to hit a HOF RC late in the boximage

Anyway, thanks for reading and checking out the rips. Back with more soon. I still have 3 more boxes of Pro Set, 2 more boxes of 89 Donruss, 2 more 88 Topps FB and 25 or so 89 Topps Traded FB sets to break!

  • Oh man I bet the 89 pro set was a fun rip. About how many hof's cards did you pull that would be worth the grading fee?

I think it's a small list. Barry, Deion, Troy, thurman and Montana. I think I've seen Gibbs, parcells and ditka sell for over grading fee. I don't think anything goes for over $25 though. The william perry sp sells for a lot but it isn't in series 2 and not likely to be in series 1.

89 was such a great year for fb rookies. Were either of the gizmo Williams cards the error? I also loved the series 3 packs. Series 3 had sterling sharpe with sweet baby blue borders. If he didn't get injured he prob would be on the hof list.

Kyle, thanks. Yes, the floodgates are open. It will be a junk filled week!

<< <i>Oh man I bet the 89 pro set was a fun rip. About how many hof's cards did you pull that would be worth the grading fee? >>

Tim, yup, the 89 Pro Set has been the most fun by far. I think most of the HOF RC's would be worth their grading fees in 10's. The question is which of them would be worth their grading fees in 9's as that is a possible outcome with any gem looking card depending on the grader. That list is probably just Barry. If I pull a gem looking Aikman or Deion, I would probably sub those and any gem looking Barry RC. I am mainly after a Barry 10. Hopefully, I will pull a few with all the boxes I have.
Beck6--Thanks, I will definitely have my eyes open for any gem looking Boz RC's too.

    << <i>The first Barry Sanders card looks like a possible 10. >>

Yes, I agree on the first Barry Sanders. That is the one I am sending in and hopefully it snags a 10. What do you think of the Derrick Thomas next to it? Those were the two cards I thought had shots at 10¡¦s from the first Pro Set box.

Agreed, it's a small list. I won't be subbing much. Probably only the cards on your list, and even then, the only cards I end up subbing may be centered Barrys.

How do you tell if the Gizmo Williams is the error version? I agree on the Sterling Sharpe card. Those were sweet and he was definitely on a HOF path before injuries got him.

Tim, I don't know, when is your next rip? If I had your stash maybe I could rip, but I am still a junior member working on filling one box.

The Gizmo Williams error is football spelled with one L on the back...it was up there with the perry and the elway errors back in the day. What was the story with the Santa Clause card from 89? was it inserted in packs or was it a mail in offer?

I feel like the 1989 was sent to dealers and then in 1990, it went into packs and everyone thought it was great until they realized that everyone had one.
  • I prefer the action look of the 1989 Pro Set rookies vs the face pictures of the 1989 score. In my opinion, I'd rather own the 1989 Barry and Deion Sanders. 1989 Score Deion Sanders is like an 80's yearbook photo.

Congrats on the pulls and thanks for the scans.

Thanks everyone for following along on some of the rips. I never posted pictures, but I had been sitting on 25 sets of 1989 Topps Traded Football. Along with the wax that I ripped, I ended up going through all 25 of those sets. From the wax rips I didn't really have much to submit: No Griffey=No subs for 89D, and the nice Bo Jackson that I pulled had too many PD so no dice from the 88 Topps Football wax boxes, 89 Pro Set did yield one gradable Barry Sanders RC. As it turned out, the half case of 89 Traded FB was my best bet. I sent in 4 Barry Sanders cards and one Aikman. Results are below. Pretty happy with the sub. This was a test sub for the 89 Traded sets. I may have some more Barry and Aikmans to send in. I will have to look over Deion Sanders too. Unfortunately, not a lot of value in subbing much besides the Barry as you will be lucky to recoup your grading fees with any other card in a 9, so it's gem or bust. I will be keeping one of the Gem Topps Barry's and the Gem Pro Set for my PC. The other 4 cards will be on my BST thread. Anyway, thanks for following along.

Thanks Tim! I should have put a disclaimer that the junk wax wasn't baseballimage Sure you were expecting some Maddux, Griffey or Thomas slabs in the thread. Hopefully when I get another free moment I can get into the 89 Fleer rack box and find a nice Griffey, Johnson or Ripken variation.
