I'm not sure what security need this addresses other than possibly making it a bit more difficult to crack a case and slide in a new flip. On the back would not work since as we've seen on scams before, they just slide a new red bordered front and leave the existing flip in so the back looks correct. With all the online listings showing the front only, it would be nearly useless there. I don't find it distracting, just unnecessary and wouldn't pay to reholder anything for this.
When I first saw this I figured the hologram was actually "bar code" like to the individual card in the holder...doesn't look like the case. I still think it's an upgrade..not the new 100 dollar bill, but still a minor improvement. They really need to do these things in my opinion.
Recently there was a boardmember that purchased a PSA 10 Joe Montana Rookie on ebay. Turned out the card was more like a PSA 7 and the scammer printed a fake PSA 10 front flip and slipped it in over the original. So the back hologram would still show. Having the front hologram will make the front flips harder to fake.
It's a little redundant to have "PSA" in the red border at the top, and then again in the hologram. I would rather have seen them either put the hologram in the top border or remove the text in the border altogether.
Agree that it's a minor improvement, yet an improvement nonetheless. I have a card I need reholdered -- case is cracked -- so maybe this is my incentive to send it in.
Also agree w/ Geordie in that "PSA" in the border and in the hologram is a bit redundant. They could have made the "PSA" at the top into the hologram.
I think the new security feature is useful. The new holder is much less tamper-proof. However, when you see an ebay listing for a PSA card, you don't know whether the old holder or new holder is being used. (You might be able to guess by the cert #, but not always correct.) With the hologram on the flip, you would know immediately that the card is in the new holder and that the PSA cert is genuine.
As others have said, I don't think the eye appeal of the new hologram is the best. Wish they made it a little less innocuous like put it on the back of the flip or in a corner.
<< <i>a) it was definitely a needed change - I don't think anyone could disagree that security needed to be improved
b) all things considered, it is a relatively unobtrusive change that maintains the original overall aesthetic of the flip >>
I agree with all of this. Additional security was necessary and this isn't an eyesore. I've got 2 subs at PSA right now and eager to get one of the new flips in hand.
I guess the key problem for a prospective purchaser of a PSA-graded card, (whether its on ebay, at a show or any other venue) is whether the card offered for sale is supposed to be in a holder containing the new security logo or not. Given that there are millions of graded cards that do not contain this feature, unless the Cert Verification application will contain data as to whether a specific cert number is supposed to carry the new security logo its value to prevent fraud is minimal. Assuming the new feature is not easily reproducible, it would provide some additional security for those cards that are graded going forward.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all "right-thinking" people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
I like the concept but I also think like others have said that having the redundant PSAs on the flip seems odd looking.
On a side note, if they're going to change the flip I wish they would also put the cert#/bar code on the back of the flip. Has anyone else scanned a bunch of the same cards front and back and then tried to match up which back scan goes to which front scan?

This is known as “bad luck.”
