Giants slugger pulls even with Mark McGwire for fifth

PHOENIX (AP) -- Barry Bonds hit 583rd career home run Wednesday night, tying Mark McGwire for fifth place all-time. ADVERTISEMENT

The San Francisco slugger hit a two-run shot off Arizona reliever Eddie Oropesa in the sixth inning. Bonds, who set the single-season record with 73 homers last season, is second in the majors with 16 this year -- one behind Sammy Sosa.

Bonds needs three more homers to tie Frank Robinson for fourth place.

Bonds pulled a 2-2 pitch that hit the foul pole in right field and bounced back onto the field. The ball, which had a high trajectory, traveled an estimated 380 feet. Coming with Ramon Martinez aboard, it sent the Giants to a 7-4 lead.
