1896 “United Snakes of America” Billy Bryan’s One Dam... The "RARE" Zerbe-56 / Schornstein-356 Variety

1896 “United Snakes of America” Billy Bryan’s One Dam, Zerbe-56 / Schornstein-356, Aluminum, 44.1mm Diameter, AU, Reeded Edge @ $ALE PENDING Shipped.

In 1896 you may not have given a rat's ass but perhaps you gave one dam toward ridiculing William Jennings Bryan and the Free Silver movement. This is the rare variety which was already considered so by Farran Zerbe in 1926. It’s the only United Snakes of America Bryan Money with actual snakes in the design. The obverse features a donkey headed goose with outstretched wings standing on a wreath formed by two entwined snakes. This is also the only Bryan money which calls William “Billy”. Compared to the more commonly seen Schornstein-353 which features a Donkey headed Goose with initials P.O.P. (a reference to the Populist Party) on the wing this variety is rarely seen. Just as an example Heritage Auctions has offered nearly 20 Schornstein-353’s but has never offered a single Schornstein-356 variety as seen here in any condition. The 353’s in AU are now fetching $750 pretty regularly and even a AU Details damaged piece will command $500. The 356 here condition and surface wise is the nicest I’ve seen overall. I did see one with a bit nicer obverse UNC Details about 5 years ago but the reverse was completely roached out with oxidation. Even John Ford after 50 years as a permanent fixture on the brouse floor never managed to find an example finer then his VF-EF crudely holed for suspension example sold by Stack’s in 2005.

    Now that's cool.

I think ol' Billy Bryan was kin to my paternal grandmother (Jean Norton, 1911-1980) somehow, but I don't know if she ever met him or not.

(Turns out she was not in fact related to the numismatically notable "Emperor Norton of California" as I had once believed, however.)
