What is happening to the price of boxes of 1993 SP Baseball ?

So I've been wanting to grab a sealed box of 1993 SP for a while, but wanted to get it for the best price I could. The past several months the sales have been hovering around $500 (even in March). I even saw one go for around $450 near black Friday.

But lately, the price has just exploded and now boxes are selling for between $750 - $1000 ?

It just seems like an extremely short about of time for a 100% increase in price.

Did I miss something that happened that would help to explain this explosion in price?

  • my thoughts exactly. I'm surprised it took this long for someone to mention it. It was pretty much a 30% hike in about 30 days. Makes no sense. I guess all it takes is one buyer to set a new threshold. Should be interesting to see where it goes from here as those boxes will surely stay sealed at those prices. Ripping that would be an expensive scratch off for the most part
    It never leaves you...
  • people act like derrick jeter himself might actually be int he box.

There are sets for sale w/o Jeter for $10. Really nice looking cards.
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

With as many condition sensitive issues as this product has, plus people experiencing the Jeter card cut a tad small from the factory and being rejected for grading, it's not even worth ripping a box unless someone has more money than brains.

Does anyone know the story behind why this card is designated as his official rookie? And who is the entity that dictates which RC of a player is the official RC?

It's not really his "official" rookie card; there are Jeter RCs in many 1993 company products.

It's just his most expensive one.

Ya, it's his "official" rookie card...similar to how the 89 upper deck is Ken Griffey Jr.'s "official" rookie card. At least that's how I see it.

It is his most desired one. There is no designated, "official" rookie card.
  • I am also surprised about the box prices considering it's likely a losing proposition at $400 as I've seen corner dings on all 93 SP box breaks in the last year. It'll fall back down to earth by next year as Jeter will be out of sight, out of mind. As for Jeter's rookie card, it's a base card and part of a regularly distributed product to the masses. It also happens to be the best.

The Jeter PSA 10 has fetched over $30,000 as of late. As that number goes up, so will unopened.

I think I have six packs of 93 SP unopened and usually grab one or two from BBCE when I make orders from them. I'm thinking in 10 years I'll be bored enough to open em, unless the price is way to high by then and I talk myself out of it.

What will this box be worth 15-20 years from now? I would think this is a "must have" box for die hard unopened collectors.

It's been interesting to watch. I grabbed two for right around $400 before last season and was disappointed seeing them peak at like 550 and then start down a little. I almost sold one, but glad I held on.

I agree that it's going to be a classic box. I think most of the younger collectors (below 25) aren't collecting much unopened yet, at some point I think they'll jump in a jeter, lebron rookie boxes, Etc will become even hotter

I get the whole notion of this being Jeter's best rookie card to have and the condition sensitivity, hence the huge prices of high grade examples. I just don't get the soaring prices now. Wouldn't these normally have soared leading up to his final playing days, when ESPN was showing his last game here and there? He is still the same sure fire first ballot player with the same statistics as he was 7 months ago. I could also still see a bit of an increase in 5 years when people begin guessing if his percentage vote total will be among or the highest ever. But seriously, why now? Any real or perceived observations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Prices are crazy...so I picked up a PSA 8 Jeter SP rookie to ease the temptation to get caught up in the frenzy.

    Doing a little more research....

In February 2015 - boxes were selling for right at $500 (some before shipping...some with free shipping....). Those were for auctions. There were still the buy it now's that were being snagged between $550-$600

In March 2015 - boxes crept up to ~$550 (auctions) and at the very end of the month it bumped to the $600 mark with two auctions ending at $625 and $633. Buy it now's were in the $550-$600 range with one buy it now being hit at $699.99

    And then here's comes April

On April 10th there was an buy it now that was purchased at $993 Link Here

shortly after there was a PWCC auction that ended at $850

    Enter the cascading of events!

I believe those two events are what triggered the craziness. Particularly the $993 one. We all know that PWCC and Probstein auctions tend to blow the pricing curve out of the water for no discernible reason, but then trend has continued for the entire month of April.

Now, prices are starting to calm down (in my opinion). You can now buy a box RIGHT NOW on ebay for $801. There are also a couple of online retailers that have it either at or under the $700 mark.

I have my fingers crossed that these will get back to the $500-$550 level so I can snag one for my unopened collection.

I bought a box of 93 SP for $500 at the Chantilly, VA card show in April from a dealer.

Nice ! Closest sports card dealers to me are at least 90 miles away. Im not even sure when shows are (granted...I haven't taken the time to google it)

Was it a high volume dealer or more of a "mom and pop" type outfit?

Not sure if the dealer had a small shop or just sets up at shows. The box was tucked away underneath a bunch of other boxes. He was firm on the price and I almost walked (thought they still sold for $500 - $550 on ebay) but with the recent rise in prices I ended up getting a much better deal than I thought at the time.
