Anglo-Saxon newp (Eadred, King of Wessex)

I've been eyeing this for a while, but hesitated on pulling the trigger earlier because the grade is "only" GVF, even though the coin looks fabulous to my eye. Who am I to argue with the experts at CNG, right? (The list price reflected the coin's apparent quality, not its technical grade because a mundane GVF really should be priced much closer to $1000 than $2000.) Anyway, after some email exchange regarding CNG 99 as well as other stuff, I casually inquired about this coin and decided it was for me after all.

ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Wessex. Eadred. 946-955. AR Penny (22mm, 1.43 g, 3h). Horizontal-Trefoil 1 (HT 1) type (BMC i). Mint in the Midlands or South; Heremod, moneyer. + EADRED REX, small cross pattée / HERE ΠOD ΠO in two lines; +++ between, trefoils above and below. CTCE 38; SCBI 34 (BM), 525; North 706; SCBC 1113. Good VF, toned.

The reverse legend says Heremod Mo, meaning Heremod was the moneyer.

I just got the coin, and it was a rough 6-day wait. (Yes, I am impatient, but its only going from PA to NJ!)

Anyway, the coin is totally gorgeous but different from the picture. The obverse is toned darker (but not "ugly" dark) and looks even more original than the image. The reverse is like the image, and yet is NOT like the image. In hand, the reverse is brilliant flashy throughout 60% of the coin, with the toning at what seems to be at slightly less depth then seen in the image. It's almost as if the reverse image has a reduced contrast.

The strike has minor areas of weakness, while the fields exhibit striations that expectedly give an added sheen to the coin. The metal fatigue that you see on the reverse is quite noticeable in the image, but much less so in hand and I feel the metal is still just fine.

CNG graded this coin GVF, but in hand I'm loving it. If all GVF pieces come looking this nice, I'd say "bring them all to me!!!". If I were offered this as a "NEF", I'd not complain.

This is a keeper. This fits my set. I needed a non-portrait Eadred too. This was an itch well scratched.
