Nice to see a few people have put a lot of thought into this. I just might put together a list from what has been posted and get to work on it one day. image

It would be nice to put together a strong list, with most in agreement, and submit it to PCGS along with an enthusiastic request to create a registry set.

Sure, an email sent to BJ (I believe) with a link to a cleaned up list on the Registry Forum might do the trick. I could see there being two sets, the Top 50 Attainable or the Top 100 Attainable that includes GOLD.

I'll likely polish my Top 50 list a bit in the next couple of days and can post it then. I already have a few good general ideas of how I would revise it. I think we have enough coins listed in the thread that just about anyone could give it a go. There certainly seems to be majority agreement with most of the coins.

Kind of a personal thing but a great exercise for an individual based on there interests and means.

I can't believe that the '100 Greatest Coins' includes the 1916-D Mercury dime and the 1916 SLQ but it does not include the 1921-S Walker!! imageimage How can the rarest key to the entire series of arguably the most beautiful classic coin design not be included??? It is easily as rare and costs even more than each of those other two in comparable grades, too!!

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

There will be a flaw in almost any list of 100 coins. As for the current Registry 100 Greatest, I believe there to be more problems than just that....but everyone has their own opinion....and that's okay. image By the way, in EF40 the PCGS Price Guide lists the 16-D Merc at $5,750, the SLQ 16 at $10,000 and the 21-S Walker at $4,000. In higher grades things do reverse themselves though. image

I have no problem including a 21-S Walker.

    But I have two comments:

    1) I already have too many moderns in my list!

    2) Dontcha just love condition rarities?

If we are ok with something like "any CC Morgan" I'd vote to include any DMPL Morgan. They have a very cool look that just isn't found in any other series.

I believe MLC's definition of MODERN is anything newer than 1792. imageimage

I was going to comment earlier, but It's pretty tough to decide what should and shouldn't be in a set like this. Beyond that, are we aiming for type coins (any $20 Saint) or individual issues (a 1908 NM Saint)? Thinking that there are already plenty of type sets, it should probably represent only individual issues....

I think a DMPL Morgan is a good idea, but which one? A 1921 Peace dollar should be there, and also the 1909 S-VDB, 1955 DD cent, 1916-D Merc, and 1916 SLQ. A "no cents" Liberty nickel should be there, but they're the opposite of rare. The 1943 cent is the same.

Which classic commem should make the cut? The Hawaiian? Isabella? The Lafayette dollar? None of them really stand out and other really fantastic designs (Oregon, Pilgrim, Texas, Columbian) wouldn't be acknowledged.

I suppose for most issues you could just shoot for the keys...... 1932-D Washie, 1934-S Peace Dollar, 1893-S Morgan, 1901-S Barber quarter??? but which Barber Half? It's the toughest type coin in the 20th Century Type set in higher grades, but no single issue stands out as the key.

Include bullion? 2009 UHR??? Other modern issues? The 1995-W Proof ASE?

The 1794 FH dollar is out due to its price, but which then do you include? A 1795 3-leaf or 2-leaf. Here were back to a type coin, which really isn't the point.

A 1796 quarter is out, but the 1804 might just barely make the cut in VF or low F grades - but is it a "great" coin?

So...... I have more questions than answers. What counts as great to me wouldn't even be close for the next guy. I don't have much interest in "made for collector" coins. That wipes out virtually all proof and many commemorative issues. I'd hardly expect anyone else to take that viewpoint.....
