Craiglist Scam

We listed a log cabin dollhouse that was our daughters today on Craigslist for $160. About 5 hours later I got a text saying that someone will take it but I need to send my full address so that they can send a money order and that they will add $30 tot eh order. They said that they will pick up the item when I receive the money order. I sent a message back saying cash only and I can leet them in a public place. I never heard back from them. I am 99.9% sure it was a scam. They probably wanted me to cash the money order thinking it is OK. They then come right away to get the doll house and then days later I get a chargeback for the bad money order from my bank. It was my first craiglist post and I had to laugh that someone tried to scam me.

    A scam for sure..................

Craigslist is full of scams from what I hear. Just this past week my brother answered a help wanted ad for house cleaning. To make a long story short, they wanted to send my brother a check or money order for $1,600.00 using $400.00 advanced pay to secure my brothers availability, with the balance of $1,200.00 for him send Western Union to the painters to start their work. Yeah, like that's going to happen................

I'm shocked to hear there are scams on Craigslist.

I typically do not reply to those obvious scam emails when I sell crap on CL. I think some are just looking for email addresses. The common email is one that merely asks if the item is available. The phrasing is almost always the same and not always accurate for the type of item you are selling. Seems to me they must just want to confirm email addresses to add to their database!?
  • I went as far as sending my address to them so that they could send this so called money order. It was purely out of curiosity as I knew darn well this deal wasn't happening. Sure enough, priority mail comes and it wasn't even a good fake. They would have laughed at me if I tried to cash this thing. I don't see how it's possible that someone could be taken by this but it apparently happens from what I'm told by they

I laughed when I saw the text. After telling them cash only I replied back later and have not heard from them in hours when they were texting right back before.

I also think that they were looking for my full home address to snail mail the money order to. My wife thought that they wanted it to come and rob us. I told her I dont think the dolhouse will put us up on the "lets rob this house" list.

i'd never let someone leet me in a public place. well, maybe behind a poorly manicured shrubbery.

I prefer the meet at IHOP/share your neighbor's address approach

Haha I had this exact scam sent to me when I sold my washer and dryer after an upgrade. Told them the same thing and never heard a peep after.

  • My buddy just had the same exact experience selling a 1985 topps tiffany set. The guy said the exact same thing as you did. They agreed to $1000 for the set, saturday he got a check for $2575. The bank said the check is a scam and once cleared the buyer will say he over paid and receive the $1575 difference.

I don't think the "buyer" is looking for that $1575 - he just wants the item for free.

This is the most popular scam on Craigslist and it happens on every since listing I've ever posted on there. They offer to send a money order or bank check for X amount of money over the agreed price... then they would send someone to pick up your item, and you give that person the X amount in which they overpaid.

I've heard of people actually falling for this crap. They cash the check/mo at the bank, and make the transaction. A month or so later you get a call from the bank and the FBI. Now you're out all of your money AND the item you sold. People dumb enough to fall for this phishing almost deserve what happens to them.

I hate using Craigslist so much, but sometimes it's the only way to sell something if it's too large or not worth shipping.
  • Happened to me a few years ago. Had a set of tires for $300. Guy says he would send me a cashiers check for $2000 if I would hold them until he could arrange pickup. At the time of pickup, I was supposed to give the courier $1000 and the extra $700 was mine to keep. Obvious scam and I still have the check.
