Hi All,
New guy who feels a bit like a kid in his first day at new school as I'm making my first post. Many a Google query for unopened baseball cards has led me to the CU Forums over the past couple years and I thank the collective brain trust of The Boards for awesome guidance.
A few thoughts for my first post:
1. I am a very humble amateur baseball card collector (ok, I harbor a fairly serious addiction toward 1980s unopened, hence the forum handle/name) who is driven to learn more, and maybe fall into late 70s unopened more than I already have
2. The collective knowledge on these boards is absolutely second to none - breadth and depth is just astonishing.
3. I am rather certain that I cannot reciprocate, in terms of commensurate contributions to the posts/dialogue, what I acquire in terms of knowledge here, but I will certainly share all that I possibly can
4. For those of you with a spouse and kids, how the heck do you allocate energy toward our hobby? (I can actually share something meaningful here in terms of clandestine strategy)
5. Thank you all for letting me find and join a community of people who are as collectible driven as me (and probably to a much greater extent)!
In short, this place is just FLAT OUT AWESOME!

With regards to #4, it can be a challenge for sure. I find myself paying attention to my collection in spurts. Feel free to share your clandestine strategy.
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
velkommen.
As for #4, my wife works 3rd shift and my 3 kids are in bed by 8:30... that's about the only time I have to be involved with my collection, but it works.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>Awesome intro John. Glad to have you aboard!

Hiya John
Awesome intro!
Welcome.
Please share what you've picked up.
I don't collect unopened but do have some stuff I picked up decades ago when it was much more reasonable.
Looking forward to your posts. Don't be a stranger.

It was hard to continue clandestine activity when boxes kept showing up while I was at work. I've found that honesty is the best policy when it comes to my card budget.
All the best in your collecting.

I tend to have a binary approach to hobbies, all or nothing. So this is a huge challenge for me. But 1970s hit the nail on the head. Family first. That said, when the kids reach ripping age (whatever that may be) I will look to blend family & hobby!
<< <i>Welcome fellow brother in unopened. All the best. In regards to #4, it's basically hit and run in the evenings and free reign after bedtime.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets the eye rolls from the wife when yet another box shows up on my doorstep, which does keep me somewhat under control. Unfortunately I am unable to contain my collection in one place. The flip side is that I have some in my home office, some in my office at work and the rest in various other places. I derive enormous enjoyment looking at stacks of unopened baseball cards and get to experience that daily in multiple places. Though I would be remiss if I didn't state that my preference would be to have a single dedicated location to display.
<< <i>I hope you get to participate in a BBCE Group Rip on here... I think you would really enjoy it. Welcome![/q
Thanks, I am definitely in if there are 80s BBC! I actually stumbled onto this forum by way of a google search picking up a group rip. If memory serves, someone netted a Gwynn on top of a cello out of an 1983 Topps Cello case break from BBCE. Served as a very solid indicator of BBCE's integrity to me.
LOL I was going to post something similar.
Welcome John !
Now collecting:
Topps Heritage
1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
All Yaz Items 7+
Various Red Sox
Did I leave anything out?
So you're into unopened, eh? All I can say is ....
They call me "Pack the Ripper"
I definitely share a lot of your same interests with unopened. I started in the 80's and am now living life in the 70's. Its a good life
I think the best thing that you can do is post pictures of some of your favorite things and encourage others with their collecting goals. There is even a thread to post your pickups from the month and I find this one of the best things about the boards is seeing what others have.
As far as collecting with a family. I'm sort of new to the game as I've been married for about a year and a half, and just have a newborn baby, so I'm definitely learning in that regards. I'll echo what others say and that is just be honest with what you are doing with your wife. Its easy for us guys sometimes as we may control the checkbook, and thus, things could slip by the wife. I've also found that I may have to sell some stuff to acquire things I want if they are over a certain dollar amount. And, lastly, always note that your wife and family are first and that in the grand scheme of things we're talking about cardboard here.
Look forward to your posts and encouraging words!

Jeremy, fatherhood is beyond awesome. Especially when it is your first. Mine are 2&5 now and it has been the most incredible time of my entire life. I only started collecting again in very late 2011 after a 20yr hiatus and by that time my daughter was a very demanding two year old. So I have never had an adult collecting experience without the kid element in the house. Therefore I don't rip all too often. And worse still, I know very few people who collect anymore so it's not as much fun without the sharing element. Given the tremendous posts I've seen from some guys on here (Nikklos, Larkin, Grote, etc) I suspect that they get a great deal of satisfaction from the "share".
Now time to learn how to use Photobucket and contribute some pics from my modest hoard.
Welcome to the boards here. There is a wealth of information to be learned here and it is a great place to interact with fellow collectors. It sounds like we have a similar collecting background. I grew up collecting in the late 80's early 90's and stopped collecting somewhere in high school. I picked up the hobby again in 2012 and have been at it full force since then. I've got a soon to be 7 year old son and we rip modern packs together. My vintage unopened stuff stays unopened though One suggestion, don't be afraid to PM other board members. I have 1000 posts and 2800 private messages. You can get to know a lot of great people on here and PMing is a great way to do that. No one I know off the boards here collects so this is the place I get to share in the fun of the hobby. Look forward to seeing you around here!
