"The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has expanded its cameo (CAM) and deep cameo (DCAM) designations on Proof and Special Mint Set coins. For the past decade these descriptions have been offered on the coins of 1950 to date, but under the new program all US coins minted from 1793 to date will be eligible for this specification."

<< <i>PCGS added Cameo and Deep Cameo designations to U.S. Proof and SMS coins and U.S. coins dated earlier than 1950 on June 1, 2001. Read about it here.

Close but not a ringer on when Cameo was first designated for any coin.

If it looks Cam enough who cares what the holder says. I have had graded non cam coins get the designation upon resubmit.
With cheaper coins I wouldn't worry so much about it.
<< <i>It's a 35-40k coin so whether it makes cameo or not is a big deal. Not the price point I can just buy and hope for the best without really doing some leg work.

I see. My thought still remains the same. Whether a coin is worth 50 bucks or 50K, it's either a cam or not. I assume the dealer is trying to sell it as a cam even though the holder says no? If you are going to take the gamble, there has to be some payoff, and that payoff should be buying it for less than the cam price of course.
