When did PCGS start attributing CAMEO grades?

What holder type or year was the beginning of the cameo designations?

I think PL and DMPL Morgans were designated from day 1. Others (modern and vintage proof coins) came later. The answer could be figured out by examining old pop reports.

PCGS added Cameo and Deep Cameo designations to U.S. Proof and SMS coins and U.S. coins dated earlier than 1950 on June 1, 2001. Read about it here.

"The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has expanded its cameo (CAM) and deep cameo (DCAM) designations on Proof and Special Mint Set coins. For the past decade these descriptions have been offered on the coins of 1950 to date, but under the new program all US coins minted from 1793 to date will be eligible for this specification."

Close but not a ringer on when Cameo was first designated for any coin.

LindeDad, if you can show an example of any PCGS holdered coin with a CAM or DCAM designation that would have pre- dated a 1991 certification, I'm sure it would help everyone to know. I won't hold my breath waiting though. image

I believe it depends on the series. I received a DCAM designation on an 1897 Liberty Nickel around 2000. As I remember it was not long after they started grading CA and DCAM for the series.

I've just been looking at a coin locally that is in the older white holder that states the "series". And "coin". It looks very much cameo, but does not have the designation. The price I'm willing to pay will depend on if it was graded pre-cameo designation.

Older white holder ? What company are you referring to ? PCGS never had a hard plastic capsule with a white insert. The closest they came to a white insert was with the "doily" label which had a faintly white background on the front.

This is PCGS. This is the holder generation between the OGH and the current light blue holders. White paper with black print. AKA PCGS generation 11.

If it looks Cam enough who cares what the holder says. I have had graded non cam coins get the designation upon resubmit.

It's a 35-40k coin so whether it makes cameo or not is a big deal. Not the price point I can just buy and hope for the best without really doing some leg work.

With cheaper coins I wouldn't worry so much about it.

I see. My thought still remains the same. Whether a coin is worth 50 bucks or 50K, it's either a cam or not. I assume the dealer is trying to sell it as a cam even though the holder says no? If you are going to take the gamble, there has to be some payoff, and that payoff should be buying it for less than the cam price of course.

I hear ya. I'm waiting to see what I can drill the price down to.
