Need opinions on a Clemens auto

I'm not really an auto guy, but from everything I can find this doesn't look good. Anyone know Clemens autos?

No good, it's similar in some ways but that's definitely not Rogers signature

Wow, and on a certified Topps issue. I agree, that doesnt look good.
  • It's good. Roger's auto has varied a little over the years. I have seen this version a few times and I have also seen a few of these "Topps Certified" cards sell over the years with that near exact auto. If it wasn't Roger's auto, what's the implication? Topps is in the autograph forgery business? Nah!
  • Its good.

Not implying anything. I don't believe that Topps would intentionally put out bad autos.
I am questioning that this card was actually made by Topps.

Believe what you want, but Roger Clemens did not sign that card.

The implication is that most of the cards signed are not signed in front of Topps/company employees. They are packed and shipped to the athletes or their agents tone signed. If you read the back of a lot of Upper Deck product, it says something like "obtained directly from the athlete" or something along those lines. There's been plenty of controversy around Panini and several of their various card issues.

Believe what you want, but I've been getting Clemens autographs a few times a year since 1998, but more importantly since he came to the Astros this is not what his autograph looks like.

There are similarities as I stated before, unfortunately that's all they are - similarities.

This is not an authentic autograph, regardless of what it says on the card.

It may be "guaranteed", but it's not authentic.

    +1

Clemens auto was transitioning around 2004. From a SIMILAR style to this to his more current style. The more I look at it, the more I dont think its real. I have seen this same issue with good autos though. It's very possible a family member or friend/agent signed a few for him.

I would agree with this. I remember about 15 years ago (give or take), I remember picking up packages out of a drop box for Fedex.
Every now and then there was a package in there from Dennis Eckersley going to UpperDeck or Topps (I don't remember which company). 1 of the times, the box was not taped and must have opened when it was put in the drop slot. I had to put everything back in and seal it up. There were hundreds of signed cards and signatures on stickers. So these cards were going to his home and being returned after he signed them. Now the company I would think expects him or any other player to sign this stuff but some players may have someone else sign for them...

  • i don't like it, even tho it could be real...and therein lies the problem. you'll never know for sure even tho it's certified, better just to buy a typical example.

Autos are funny. Both of these are first hand and don't look alike. Maybe 2-3 years between.
