Autograph cards

Have always wondered how much the card companies paid for a player to sign all the cards. Is there a price range say from a draft prospect,1st year pro to a retired player/HOFer. Would it be a one year contract,by the # of cards or multi-year contract. Goverened by the players union? Any ideas?

Good questions. I don't know the actual answers to any of your questions... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! So my guess would be that the contracts are not governed by the players union otherwise Lebron wouldn't be allowed to have an exclusive contract with Upper Deck (there are other examples, but he and Michael Jordan are probably two of the highest profile players to have exclusive contracts). Since players can negotiate their own contracts I would guess that there is a wide range of contract sizes, with Jordan and Lebron being on the very high end of the pay scale and the undrafted rookie whose autograph is in every box probably is lucky to be making any money off their sigs.

Leaf recently said at the Industry Summit that they offered Charles Barkley six figures to sign autos for future products and he turned it down. On a side note, also read that Karl Malone will no longer be doing any autos for companies either.

That could be as low as $100,000.00. For a guy who is worth between $30,000,000.00 and $40,000,000.00 ... who earns between $2,000,000,00 and $3,000,000.00 per year ... and who has probably lost $100,000.00 in ONE HAND OF BLACKJACK ... that's not really much of an incentive.

At the golf course, a fan said Charles....."I'll bet you $50 you cannot hit the fairway!" He looked back at the fan and said, "What could I do with $50?" LOL..........

Rob ... and that number could have been $5,000.00 and Sir Charles would have had the same response.

I can give you two examples of Major Junior Hockey players who were star players at the junior level but neither of which were expected to be NHL stars. One went to to play a few seasons in the NHL. When they were in junior hockey, one was paid about $6 per signature, the other about $9. Each signed 200 stickers for a non main stream card company.
