I do have a question for the cello and rack boxes that are wrapped by OPC and BBCE. How do we know that the box of cellos/racks weren't searched for any stars showing and replaced by non-star showing cellos/racks before sent into OPC or BBCE for wrapping?

The only way to know is if it's FASC or not. I'm guessing at least the 86 FB racks have not been searched, the earlier pics Tom shared had stars showing on a few of the racks.
<< <i>The group breaks are fun so I'm interested depending on price. The last group break wiped out a lot of my funny money. Haha. The '75 and '83 baseball and '81, '84, and '86 football interest me.

Since people can now submit their own boxes to BBCE anyway, Larkin is correct in that this can happen no matter where box is wrapped.

Realistically, this has always been a possibility wherever you purchased cello or rack boxes. Even before it became popular to the masses to have Steve authenticate and wrap boxes, Steve still had to purchase his inventory from the secondary market. Unless it was from a sealed case, any cello or rack box could have been cherrypicked for stars showing then just as easily as now.

<< <i>That is true, Steve, but the difference is that Steve had and has a reputation for not cherrypicking packs with stars on top before wrapping them. That would not be the case necessarily for boxes submitted to him by others. And in cases where there are star packs in the box, like the BBG rack boxes, those packs are typically noted on the sticker to help enhance value, whereas in the old BBCE boxes the star packs were typically a complete surprise. >>
Thanks for the input guys. Just to be clear, my concern is not with Steve or Tom cherry picking; Rather the folks that sold them boxes. I think Tom and Steve have earned a solid reputation around here.

I'm in for the mini's also.

I agree with you that Steve has earned his reputation for not cherrypicking packs with stars. In my dealing with Tom, he has been excellent and I would have not trouble trusting him either. My point was only that if I were the type of person who cherrypicked boxes, I would have been just as likely to do this when I just sold the box to Steve for resale in the past or for authenticating and wrapping now (to be clear I do not do this). Ironically, IMO, I think that the labeling of star packs in BBG's rack boxes may have hurt rather than enhanced the value of those particular boxes.

I'm in for '81 cello and especially 86 FB racks. Tempted to buy the whole darn thing (86), if I can get it approved by my collecting manager first
Not to worry, she is likely not going to go for it!

<< <i>Thanks for the updates! Excited to see how prices break down. I remember the minis in the break last month went for $75/pack. >>
These are going to more, the mini box being discussed for this is FASC
Pretty sure the last break wasn't, it was "just a box"
Anyway, I should have pricing later today

<< <i>I believe all of the mini boxes that Steve has been selling are FASC, if I'm not mistaken. >>
Pretty sure not at $2700, considering it cost $3000 each to break the last case
I don't know for sure about the last break, maybe it was because of all the product sold, but I'm pretty confident he's not selling FASC boxes for less than he charged the group break last summer on the case after the national

I recall that BBCE group break last summer~the FASC box was priced at an even 3K, though prices have softened a bit since then, however.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>Do we know from where Tom obtained all these boxes/cases? Was it from one of his trips North of the Border? >>
some of it was, a lot of it he found in someone's "cave" i think
Prices are coming shortly, probably in an hour or so

<< <i>I don't understand this. The prices are current prices out there in many places and it is all the mass produced stuff. What am I missing as a deal ? >>
There is a premium for buying from a source that we trust as legit.

Guess I should have included a comment about prices - I originally had a paragraph but deleted it, clearly it was needed.
If you don't think any of this is a "deal", then just save your money for another time.
I would just say this - a lot of this product is not currently available at BBCE (basically all the FB), or it's boxes that will come from sealed cases at LESS THAN BBCE prices for "Frankenstein"/generic boxes. What's not to like about that?

Whose cave? Do you happen to know?
Id be in for any except the minis.
The reality is you don't know what is inside even if it's a FASC labeled box. That is why it is so important to buy from a reputable source.
