2 Emmitt Smiths #460/500?

I was looking for a 1996 Collectors edge Emmitt Smith #500. I notice one for sale 460/500. I looked up completed sales on Ebay and saw a 460/500 there. The problem is the # is in different places? I am not a great detective like others here but if graded to 500 someone is counterfeiting these!

  • It's possible the same card is being sold again. The one under sold items was mid January. That's just a guess.
  • this is common w this particular card. there's way more than 500 in circulation...probably closer to a thousand so you'll see many duplicate numbers. I forget the exact story
    It never leaves you...

Unfortunately, both of those are fakes. Years ago, when I was in the market for that card, I noticed a vast majority of counterfeit sigs on that card. I also noticed the same couple sellers always having what seemed like an endless supply of the auto cards. That lead me to search for the base issue which is exactly the same minus the sig. I couldn't find one on ebay or comc.

Somebody, who apparently got quite good at doing Emmitt sigs, was buying all the base cards up doing their thing. Another indicator that those are fakes is the color of the sharpie used. Check other Cowboyabilia autos and you will see the difference. The real ones look their age while most Emmitt sigs on ebay are always bright blue like they were just signed yesterday. Unfortunately, they were.

The same Emmitt counterfeiter also signed many other different issues. The sigs are the same with the same sharpie. Another tip in spotting a fake Emmitt sig is the line extending through the top of the E in Emmitt. I've shared this tip here in the past as well as other boards and that's when the scumbag doing the fakes modified the sig to fix that oversight.

Those signatures match up very well next to each other. I could see someone easily falling for one of these if they are indeed fake.

Yeah and they have including BGS and PSA. I've seen fakes in each companies slabs. I'm sure they got a quick once over under the assumption they were company issued autos
