What is up with the Chicago Cubs' 1971 & 1972 team cards?

Does anyone know or have a good guess as to why the Cubs team cards were a different format than the rest of the teams form those years? I believe the '77 may be along the same line. Always was curious about this.

The floating heads? They used it in all other years, too, with exception of 73.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

Pragmatically, the traditional "line 'em up and shoot 'em" team photo goes obsolete very quickly as players are traded, sent down or brought up. While that doesn't really bother card collectors it may have been seen to have a deleterious effect on concession sales.

In the floating-head style, the portrait of a departed player could easily be substituted for a new arrival.
