Numismatic Literature from the Library of a Professional Numismatist

The following is a selection of numismatic literature from the library of a professional numismatic. Please note, this is part I of the sale - dozens more exciting catalogs and books are forthcoming.

Early Half Dollar Die Varieties, 1794-1836, Third Edition by Al. C. Overton, Edited by Don Parsley. Hardbound with dust cover. 676 pgs. - The cover exhibits very light shelf wear. Condition is superb in all other aspects. The most sought after edition of the Overton books. - $75

The Encyclopedia of United States Silver and Gold Commemorative Coins, 1892 to 1954 by Antony Swiatek and Walter Breen. Harbound in dust cover. The cover has a ½” closed tear at the top and very light shelf wear, otherwise superb. Light foxing and some staining is noted at the fore-edge (opposite the spine) and bottom edge, respectively. This does not reach into the pages, which are unmarked, clean, and bright. Signed by both authors: “Best wishes, Marty, Walter Breen, ANA 1981”. Signed in Breen's unmistakable magenta marker. Also, in beautiful cursive script: “To Marty Clynes, May this work add to your numismatic knowledge, ?, Anthony Swiatek, 7/29/81.” - $59

Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Dimes 1837- 1891 by Kamal Ahwash. Hardbound, dark green boards, embossed silver image of 1873 Seated Dime on front and back boards.1981 second printing. Premiere Edition. 411pp. Signed by the author: “To Marty Clynes, “Happy Collecting” - numismatically yours, Kamal, 1/9/81”. - The lightest touch of shelf wear is the only detraction. Highly sought after in its own right, - an example in David Sklow's Sale Number 20, lot 933, sold for $81 – the signature adds another layer of desirability. Ahwash signatures appear quite scarce – I am unable to find another example of his magnum opus bearing his signature - $99

Complete set of “Apostrophe” Auction Catalogs. Held jointly by Stacks, Superior, RORCOA, and Paramount. David Akers took the place of Paramount from 1988 to 1990. Each sale was limited to a total of 2000 lots, with 500 lots being contributed by each participating auction firm. A particular focus was given to coins of the highest caliber – the realized prices speak for the quality of the coins; the 24,000 lots contained in the 12 sales sold for a total combined $135 million!

The pages of these catalogs contain countless rarities. The RARCOA website states that “Many of the greatest rarities in American numismatics were sold by RARCOA in these sales, including the Dexter 1804 Dollar, the 1894-S Barber Dime, and a plethora of proof gold coins. Auction '79 included the first Brasher Doubloon sold at public auction since the Ten Eyck sale in 1922.”

The following complete set is perhaps as choice a set as one may come across. Of the 12 catalogs, 8 are still wrapped in their factory cellophane. Given the scarcity of these catalogs in such lofty preservation, I have fully described the condition, down to any imperfections in the cellophane wrap. Sure to please even the most fastidious numismatic bibliophile. - Priced at $439.

Auction '79 – Excellent condition – bright white text block, with no discoloration marks or other imperfections. 433 pgs.
Auction '80 – Like new – tightly bound with clean, pearly white pages and bright boards. Slight sun fading is noted on the spine – otherwise, like new. The original Prices Realized List is tipped in. 497 pgs.
Auction '81 – Brand new, in cellophane. The cello is still tight around the book, but with a few holes. The book is not affected in any way and is as new. 525 pgs.
Auction '82 – Brand new, in cellophane. The cello is still tight around the book, but with a few holes. The book is not affected in any way and is as new. 461 pgs.
Auction '83 – Like new – tightly bound with clean, pearly white pages and bright boards. 448 pgs.
Auction '84 – Brand new, in cellophane. The cello is a bit wrinkled, but otherwise, as new. 551 pgs.
Auction '85 – Brand new, in tight cellophane. The only imperfection which might be noted, is that the cellophane exhibits a few small tears over the back board of the catalog. 546 pgs.
Auction '86 – Like new; careful examination reveal some very light scuffing of the boards when titled under light. Original Prices Realized list tipped in. 586 pgs.
Auction '87 – Brand new, in tight cellophane. Perfect in all regards. 572 pgs.
Auction '88 - Brand new, in tight cellophane. Once again, perfect in all regards. 636 pgs.
Auction '89 - Brand new, in cellophane. A small 2” separation of the cellophane at the top of the book. In all other aspects, absolutely impeccable. 671 pgs.
