<< <i>Didn't watch the game since I don't have cable, but I did watch the 30 For 30 "I Hate Christian Latenner"
Pretty good- most of the 30's have been though >>
I was up late a couple nights ago and against my better judgement, watched the last 3/4 or so of the one about Michigan's Fake Five. Okay, they wore their shorts a little differently, they listened to a little different sort of music...don't really get how that makes them a better basketball team but I disgress. But I will concede five freshmen finishing NCAA Runner-Up in 1992 is somewhat noteworthy, doesn't mean it was right of them to steal our Fab Five nickname and I'm still not convinced they were worth so much hype, especially how over 20 years later they still get all this attention even though their two silvers in 1992 and 1993 were stripped.
That being said, my first gut reaction was that a documentary of some sort should be done about the REAL Fab Five, the 1948 Wildcats. Only trouble is, they're long dead now, this was before television, and decades before college basketball in general really took off in popularity (interesting that some credit the 1979 NCAA championship for doing that...people have said the same regarding NASCAR getting put on the map because of the Daytona 500 of that very same year; to this day both are considered the all-time greatest in the history of each of those showcase events).
So how about this, a documentary about the 1992 Unforgettables? I mean, we're talking KY facing the biggest disaster/crisis in our program's history by far, with it really coming to a head in 1989. Sure it was a fantastic year for East Berlin/Eastern Europe being liberated and all that but it was our lowest point ever. As if our 1988 NCAA Tournament games and our SEC Tournament championship getting stripped wasn't already bad enough, 1989 had what remains our only losing season since 1927, Eddie Sutton being a lame duck coach that year...correction Night Court in its fifth season lame duck, and a lot our team jumped ship for greener pastures. Except for four very special young men, who in 1992 as seniors, their only chance at postseason play at all (we were ineligible in 1990 and 1991), just barely, barely missed taking us to the big stage that year (I was a fifth grader at the time; I didn't really care about sports at the time but I remember my class the day afterward making some sort of big fuss about what happened), and right after that game the quartet's shirts were immediately hung in the rafters. Now folks, I think that story is more than qualified for a good documentary of some sort. Now where is it?
