Jake, the card being in a Pro slab is a big red flag. Cards in Pro plastic are often found to be counterfeit, altered (trimmed, etc.) or vastly overgraded.

  • The question you need to answer yourself is whether or not you believe the card is counterfeit. Search Fleer Jordan Rookie card here and on google for detailed information on spotting fake ones. Once that is determined, the value could be ascertained. If you don't want to do that legwork, you are welcome to trade your gold and silver for a worthless card.
  • If the card had any value, it would already be in a PSA or BGS holder.

If it had any true value, it wouldn't be in that holder.

    Hiya Jake

Since this is a friend - the solution should be simple.

Ask your friend if it's OK to send the card to PSA for grading. If it comes back trimmed - it can be graded authentic - not sure if there's any demand for a modern card like that graded Auth.

If it's overgraded? The value for the PSA grade can be determined.

Fake will most likely really disappoint your friend.

    Good luck.

My guy is that the left side is trimmed. If untrimmed that's probably a 2500 card. If trimmed maybe a few hundred? If counterfeit (a possibility) then it's worthless.

Not worth the risk unless you are trading very little for it

Stone is exactly right. The card can be submitted to PSA and returned within a week. Almost always, if a card is graded by PRO GRADING, it is because it is counterfeit or has been altered in some way. Of course, there is a rare chance, maybe 5% or so, that it is a genuine un-altered card that found its way into a PRO holder. The odds are slim.

One thing that is worth considering is to do twenty minutes of research online about how to spot a fake 1986 Fleer Jordan.

If the card is genuine, but had been altered in some way in the past, PSA will now grade the card as AUTHENTIC, which they did not used to do.
A genuine but altered Jordan RC is still worth around $200.

Please don't trade a thousand dollars worth of valuable coins for a possible fake. I have a feeling your friend is not aware that the card has some serious red flags.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

Worth anywhere between five and a couple hundred Susan B's.
  • Oh boy. Well, the card could be trimmed or retouched. Perhaps it is the picture but those are a few of the things I see. It definitely looks real/authentic but without closer inspection I would not value it at more than a couple hundred dollars.

This is the approach I would take. Let us know how it all works out.

I would explain that I don't trust the holder and would only buy Psa or BGS. Ask him if he can sub to psa and then you'll make a deal and offer to cover the cost. Otherwise, avoid like the plague.

    Thanks a lot guys!

I'll pass on the information and unless it gets PSA slabbed I'll just avoid it.
