Opinions on 51 Mantle

Looking at a 51 Mantle that has the two
Lines vertically in the middle of the card
Which I have seen before and maybe somewhat
Common? Looking for anyone more familiar with
These to input on that. Also would you prefer
A solid psa 3,4 or 5 with those lines and great
Centering and decent corners or a psa 6 let's say
That is OC.

I can't help you with information as I am no expert on this card. I have been looking at a card like you describe with the lines (it may be the same one). While I love the centering in the card I have seen, the print lines take away too much from the eye appeal of the card for my taste. I am going to wait for another example without the lines. Just my opinion though. Good luck.

I'm guessing this is the Mantle you guys are referring to:

    The Mick

The centering, color and clarity are off the charts, but I agree that those vertical lines (common on this card) are a deal breaker. Also, the corners look 4ish at best.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Yes, that's the one I was talking about at least. I'll let the OP confirm if that's the one he was referring to. Too bad about the print lines. It is an otherwise very appealing card. It may be the best centered 51 Mantle on eBay now regardless of grade. But those lines are too noticeable for me anyway.

That's the thing with the Mantle Rookie-- for me at least, those lines can kill the eye appeal of an otherwise bold, centered, focused specimen. Finding a nice one is a feat. They can appear on the Mays as well. Whenever I think of print lines I always think of two cards plagued by them so much, the Ruth and Mantle rookies.

I don't know if that is the same one that's been up on eBay a lot lately. I follow the 51 in my searches and it seems graded ones with those lines appear a lot. To me, those lines kill that card. Otherwise great looking card minus the "lines"

I am not really an expert on this card either, but it was my "white whale" for close to two years. I continuously watched ebay for the card. I would find many that had those print lines. It seemed like the same few would come up for sale on a regular basis. IMO the print lines take a lot away from the eye appeal of the card. I looked for one that was psa 4 or below, was centered, and did not have the print lines, or creases that went through the center of the card. To be honest I had a difficult time finding one I wanted. I ended up buying mine at the National card convention and had an opportunity to hold 3 or 4 in my hands. The prices at the national can be a little higher, but the guy's often will deal a little, and it's nice to see the card in front of you before buying. Good luck on your search. I put a picture of mine below, and will say I paid quite a bit less for it, than the one you are looking at now.

That is a nice 4.... I think I could get that
One for less than the 5k but like everyone
Here it is hard ro stomach those print lines.
I think that card is undervalued because it
Is tough to find centered for sure
