Is this stain on the card or on the holder?

1973 Topps Dwight Evans PSA 9

There is a spot that appears in the scan along the edge just above the "O" in "OUTFIELDERS", is there any chance it is on the holder (or is some artifact of the scanning process) and not on the card itself?

I saw what appears to be the same card (or at least one with the exact same spot or stain) sold by a well-known online consignment seller (who posts on these boards) back in October, and now it appears the same card is on offer again by a different seller. When I messaged the well-known online consignment seller back in October about it, I got the response: "I don't see a defect on the card", which doesn't really acknowledge that he saw the spot on the scan I'm referring to and doesn't offer some explanation for it.

Anyhow, I'm looking to see if anyone has a possible explanation for the spot showing in two different auctions 5 months apart and not being on the card itself, because it really looks to me a lot like a stain.

Thanks!

Definitely an on card stain. Maybe a bad chunk in the cardboard pulp itself that is showing through the white print, but it is on the card and not the holder.

I always thought those types of stains came from a drop of oil that had been applied to the equipment and then dropped onto the cards.

On the card for sure. I seen this before on other 9's.

  • Interestingly, while the first well-known consignment seller told me, "I don't see a defect on the card", the second seller just got back to me, saying "Yes it appears to be a small oil stain of some kind. Sorry." So first guy was either lying or blind. Disappointing.
