It will attempt to place a bid 6 seconds before the end of the auction, both from the regular server and the mirror (backup) server. Only uses the mirror server if you're a paid member, and even then, only if it cannot connect to eBay for whatever reason from the main server.

I've just left it at 6 seconds and never had any issues.

I've used Gavel Snipe and had no problems at all. It's easy to use and free. I have it set at 4 seconds and have been very successful.
