Burger King packs?

I was strolling Fritsch`s website the other day and saw they were advertising burger king packs. There is 4 cards to the pack and all from the same team. As a big Tiger fan I always thought it would be fun to put the `78 set together with the Morris, Trammell and Sweet Lou rookies, I never thought I could do it this way. Are these legit? Is this how these cards were packaged originally?

Yes and yes. I have a 79 Yankees BK pack w/Munson.

ETA: The 79s were only 3 card packs, I'm sure someone can confirm 4 is the correct count for 78s.

They were just packaged in clear cellophane with 3-4 cards, I believe??

Correct, with a BK header card for 79 at least.

Additional info from Beckett: The cards in this 23-card set measure 2 1/2" by 3 1/2". Twenty-three color cards, 22 players and one numbered checklist, comprise the 1978 Burger King Tigers set issued in the Detroit area. The cards marked with an asterisk contain photos different from those appearing on the Topps regular issue cards of that year. For example, Jack Morris, Alan Trammell, and Lou Whitaker (in the 1978 Topps regular issue cards) each appear on rookie prospect cards with three other young players; whereas in this Burger King set, each has his own individual card.

I have the entire 1978 Topps BK Detroit Tigers set still in packs. Each pack has a card from the set showing on top. As a Tigers fan, especially from that era, it is one of the most favorite sets I own.

    It is a worthwhile pursuit.

The packs are condition sensitive, mainly warping. The packs weren't designed for long term storage. I keep mine in thick toploaders (jersey card size).

I opened a box of these a few years ago (1978 Yankees) and it was a blast. It's always the same cards in the packs depending on who is showing on the back. Cards graded pretty well, mostly 8s and 9s, but no 10s.

I am not a Phillies fan but somehow these found their way into my collection. Both 1979 and 1980 have 3 cards per pack.

These are definately legit 1978 packs given away at Michigan Burger King restaurants in 1978. And for the Tigers the only way to get a solitary "rookie" card for a couple great stars. PSA grades the packs too as I see a couple Yankees packs in the pop reports. I got a GAI collection put together some years ago.

  • Ripping open Burger King cards was my earliest collecting memory from back in 1978. Every other Friday my family would go to BK for dinner and I would get to rip open a couple of packs. I grew up in the Metro New York City area so we got the Yankees cards. When I got back into collecting again as an adult, I wanted to relive some old memories, so I sought out the BK cards, and discovered the awesomeness of the 78 Tigers BK cards. It took a little bit, but I managed to snag packs with Morris, Trammell, and Whitaker on top (I also added a 1981 Coca Cola pack with Gibson on top). Those four packs are amongst my favorite items in my collection now. I will add a pic ASAP because without pictures it didn't happen (as they say). Thanks for reading.

Love love love the Tigers Burger King cards. Especially the unopened packs. I still have some 78 tigers unopened packs available for anyone who may be interested in acquiring a few. I haven't been able to push myself to open any.

Mule, shoot me a pm sometime and maybe I can hook you up with some BK contraband!

Welcome to the BK fan club,

Just wondering if the 3/4 card packs were the ONLY way these were distributed? I picked up two cello packs a few years ago and just found them when looking thru some of my boxes. They were both cellos that contained the ENTIRE 1978 BK Tigers sets. I opened one and have one still sealed. Would this be a legit pack or something that was made up later? I can'e remember where I got them but I am sure I didn't pay too much for them.

one last try... anyone have info on this issue?

The wrapping looks consistent with a legit issued pack, but I've never seen a full team cello. I'm curious as well.

I just opened a few 1980 Phillies BK packs. They were terrible. All off centered and a few soft corners. Oh well, I'll still rip the rest of the packs.
