Did anyone see this 1955 Topps Baseball Set Break?

I've never heard of Burl's Sports before, but the recent '86 Fleer Basketball set break that OPCBaseball had was fun, and a great success, so I wondered if anyone here a) have dealt with Burl's before and/or b) seen this 1955 Topps Baseball Set Break? What do you think? I bought one slot right before they sold out.

Thanks in advance!

I never heard of him before, either.

But, based upon one factor - how well the guy writes - I tend to think it's a legitimate operation.

Good luck winning the Clemente RC!

For $28 a card (including shipping), that's worth a gamble, lotta big names in that set. Even some minor stars can get ya back yer money. Hope ya get one of the big guns!

That looks like a fun break. I'd have taken a slot at that price too.

    Best of luck.

I bought a couple slots in his 1941 Play Ball break back in November or December. Very pleased (outside of the fact I didn't get a huge hit!). I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again.

Is there any concerns about the legality of these? It could be considered gambling. I'd consider selling a high $ set this way but I wouldn't want to risk doing something that's of questionable legality.

It's clearly gambling, but aren't there tons of eBay auctions that use similar tactics?
  • The way it works on eBay is you pay for some worthless item (signature of the person selling the break, for example) and you get a "FREE" chance at an item. So, you aren't technically paying for the card. I don't know if that is good enough in the eyes of federal law, but it seems to work in the Wild West of eBay.
  • Hey folks,

This is my site. I'm new to CU forums. I typically use net54 for my forum needs (id: jburl). I appreciate the kind words some of you have expressed.

This is a side business of mine. My chief occupation is an editor. I built the site last summer, and started doing set breaks in October. They're a lot of fun, and they obviously have an element of risk involved. For me, it's a way of simulating opening a pack without having to drop major coin on a vintage pack. Plus, the odds are spread out evenly between commons, stars, and high numbers.

Another way I like to look at it is that it's like buying a repack process, just skipping the packing.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Really nice Koufax. The person that wins that card will be doing hand-springs. I love the concept Justin, great game of chance. Doug

The Robinson is also quite nice, especially for the grade.
