No such WB variety as shattered 8. Judging by the upper left reverse field hits on that coin it's probably PMD. It's a liner from a body bag imo.

Only 3 varieties listed in my edition are errant "8" in base of rock, large S, and med s mintmarks. You have the commoner variety. Attribution is 1858-s large S half dollar.

Is it possibly damage ? Looks kind of like a hit that moved the metal on the 8...not sure how a number would shatter

Damage, as others said. Also, there is rim damage above UNITED STATES- a sign the coin took some hard knocks. Is it really certified VG08 by PCGS?
