That is bizarre. I have no explanation for that.

I think this is just another example of the fact that CAC carries a little weight. Or perhaps, a lot of weight!

The CAC sticker is not the only difference. The coin sold for less on the Stack's site and more on the Heritage site, which might also come into play.

I was thinking that a different audience may have played a factor...CAC did not hurt either.

  • So new certification number, so harder to track in terms of history? Buyer otherwise would have been able to find what it had sold for recently and balk at multiples of previous $$? CAC is useful but how many coins over MS65 fail to CAC? 30%? Didn't Maurice Rosen do a statistical analysis of that and how the grading services are far more consistent and conservative in high grade coins?

I doubt it was anyone in the room. They were practically BEGGING me to show up and bid tonight... about the only excitement at lot viewing was whether the BBQ (Sonny Bryant's - I asked) would make it to the Gaylord...

There are some dealers (and high end collectors) out there that now pretty much only buy PCGS CAC. They wouldn't have touched the coin last year w/o the football. This year, the coin is a bargain at any price with the additional attribution. Doesn't really matter to them if they have to pay 3X as much as now they "know" they have the "finest." image

Interesting that the HA.com link shows 0 in 67 at NGC.

My thoughts, exactly. Whether correct or not, the perception is that if you are selling, it seems you'll get better action at Heritage.

They probably put it in a new holder so it could get another chance to CAC. (I'd guess the previous owner had already tried to get it CAC'd and didn't succeed).

Guys if I am correct, it was originally in an old NGC 65 thick Holder. I had a dealer friend look at it for me, because I was interested in it at the time. Its was phenomenal and he said it was way undergraded. I was blown out the first time it sold in the 65 holder. I see know it was a bargain.

While I understand that in an an auction the 'correct' grade is often preferred when realizing the best profit.....as a collector this coin would be so much cooler in the old fatty slab...maybe even with a gold bean.

Well if that's the case then some CAC Chimp paid $35,250.00 for a sticker instead of $12.50 image
