Coin Shows in Ohio

It seems that the number of coins shows have dried up big time.

Little 30 table monthly shows are still going but nothing larger.

I am in the Cleveland area.

Something going on here?

Nothing will kill a coin show faster than lack of attendance.

Sales Tax Laws are killing The Ohio Shows.

Several yeras back there was no sales tax collected on coin sales in Ohio.

Then the law changed and suddenly a dealer was required to collect sales tax on sales in Ohio.

If that wasn't bad enough EACH county had a different sales tax rate. So you could go to a show and set up and not know for sure what the tax rate in that county was and therefore you wouldn't know the correct rate to collect. Often times you would have to ask another dealer what the correct rate was. The paperwork is more than alot of guys wanted to deal with so they quit doing Ohio Shows.

The Cincinnati Greenhills coin show seems to be going OK. Haven't been for a few months though. I will admit that if it wasn't for one dealer there I probably would rarely go if ever.

There's this one but not until August. I believe it's twice a year.

Admission is $4.00 per person. Children are Free!

Early bird dealers can get in at 8:00 am for $20, this is before the show starts and allows dealers without a table to trade with other dealers.

I'm in Western PA and used to go to Cleveland area shows before they instituted the sales tax. Then PA eliminated their sales tax on coins and bullion. So come to Western PA shows, it's an easy drive. The PAN show in Pittsburgh is coming up in May and it's good sized, and no admission fee.

I am not kidding at all.

I am looking to see what happened to the larger shows.

Yes I was at a monthly 35 table show yesterday.

That list you posted is a number of those shows. I am looking for 100 some table shows which have larger dealers with most things one might be looking for.

Yes the sales tax thing put into play back in 2005 I believe, if memory serves me is annoying.

Most dealers ignore it if you are paying cash for purchases anyways.

As an Ohio resident and a collector, the sales tax has all but stopped me from buying in Ohio.

I can tell you that we have one 'big' show in Columbus each year. I have not gone regularly, but did go four years ago and found plenty to look at that I was interested in. Went again last September and was stunned to see how it had changed. Went withint he first two hours opening day and the place was pretty empty. Walked the room and found very little to look at in my areas. Walked out after about 30 minutes and would likely not go back again.
