So I was looking at silver eagles and I notice a listing about to end for a 1994 P $1 NGC PF70 UCAMEO American (PROOF SILVER EAGLE) - PR70! RARE KEY DATE that sold for around $1,500. I am seeing about 65 of these sold on eBay since the first of the year. Are they really that rare? What's the big deal?

$41,250 = Wow! but only one 95 W sold listing on eBay. What I don't understand is the 65 sold of the 94 P. Just doesn't seem that rare to me. Am I missing something?

The 1994 P PF70 was a lot more than $1500 a few years ago. These are actually going down in price.
  • Many of the early dates are worth a premium in PR70.

I still can't get my head around the huge jump from 69 to 70, especially when this grading is not well reproducible, as has been seen from several studies on resubmissions (although with a coin such as this, who would want to send in a supposed 1500 dollar coin to see if it might come back as a 69 at a fraction of the value?).

It is ground rehashed and there are many that claim to be able to tell the difference; I feel like I can as well, but have frequently seen 70s in TPG holders (no names mentioned) that I would downgrade for luster breaks or minor flaws. When the price diff is not great, I may spring for the 70 as with the GAEs in recent years.

Agreed it would be a fool buying one at 1500 and trying to flip for a profit or that thinks somehow the pops in 70 are going to DECREASE....

Did anyone notice about half way down the linked page? There is a 94 P ICG MS-70 that went for $999.95. Was that a mistake where the buyer thought they were buying the proof?

    Amazing.
