Do you use the Best Offer option on your eBay listings? Do you set an automatic accept and/or declin

When I have an eBay bucks offer I do a search and see if I can find something I like (usually like now during the last few hours)

Since the offer has an expiration date, I have to either bid on something ending today, or use a BIN (which is what most listing are anyway)

But when I see the Best Offer option on a listing I have to skip it because
    1) I'm not going to do a BIN since I know the seller will sell for less2) The seller probably won't respond to my best offer until after the eBay bucks promotion ends
I have been lucky a couple of times with the seller having set an automatic acceptance price and was able to buy with my eBay bucks offer on something I really like, but that's risky and could cost me up to $100 if they accept the next day.

As a seller, I rarely use it because I don't get many offers and most of them are so low they aren't even worth considering.
BUT - I never automatically set an automatic decline and always counter offer if any offer comes in that's too low.

In a way I see the value of doing an automatic decline, because you have a potential buyer looking at the coin and they can do 3 offers. So it is possible they'll bump it up a few bucks and try it again.

What strategy do you think works the best?

I use the Best Offer option on all of my BIN listings. I personally don't set the auto decline, or the auto accept. I use the ebay app on my iphone, so I try to respond to all offers pretty quickly. I used to use the auto decline settings, but ebay doesn't notify you if the offer is made and declined automatically. If the offer is close enough to my acceptable selling price that I think a counter may get the deal done, I want to be able to reply. If it is a lowball offer, I just decline. I would say that most of the offers I get are reasonable, and probably 90% of my sales are by best offer. When someone just hits the Buy it now I assume I listed it too cheap.image

  • I don't get enough or ridiculous offers to use auto decline. Those with hundreds of items listed perpetually use it to effect.

Why tell a potential buyer that you will take less than you said you wanted? It's like running a reverse auction and starting at the top and working down.

Probably because the BIN is way over what the seller is willing to accept.

This is true, but it to me is no different than asking a dealer his best price at a show. What the person feels the real market value of a coin is vs what they are willing to accept can be two very different numbers. Why only list for your bottom line.

start your auction with your bottom line.

"some morons like offering me half of what my coins are worth. " buyers have gotten very assertive as of late, telling me what my items are "worth" .... according to what they want to pay, I just giggle and toggle over to the blocked bidder page. I used to attempt to educate buyers who were obviously misled with the grey sheet, or just pulled numbers out of their DREAMS I tried to explain to them that I determine the price with "replacement value" not book value. if you can find someone selling $100 bills for $30 you better buy them, I cant sell my $100 coins for $30 then pay 20% in fees and another 10% of my shipping charges just to sell it, or heres one: "see where ive had ten offers on this item ?" how many of those offers do you think were higher than your offer of 25% of my asking price ?
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

A lot of smart people seem to find that works the best. They start the auction at the lowest price they would take and set the buy it now price at about the most they could hope to get from the buyer not willing to risk the auction.

What they miss out on is the rare gotta have it fight between two buyers - that's when stuff ends up selling for Moon money.

other sellers swear that only the starting at 99 cent auctions actually works. But you do occasionally here them lament about how cheap something sold for.

I guess that's what makes a horse race...

As a buyer i often place a low bid early so eBay reminds me [and sometimes I get lucky] then at the end I may consider a higher bid...

I use this method when I want to list auctions, but then you are relying on the buyers actually seeing the coins in a weeks time. BIN best offer keeps my items up for longer. I prefer the latter.

I suspect most of the ebay bashing comes from those that choose the .99 cent auction.

I do use them (auto declines). Easier to week out tire kickers from buyers.

That being said I don't always understand why some people even use that feature...Let me explain.
There was a MS64 PCGS Morgan (1887) up with a Make An Offer. List price was 67 with $3 shipping.
Coin was okay, would not upgrade. I still liked the looks enough to shoot the seller my offer.
I sent an offer of $64.
It was declined with a note "sorry but I can't sell it this low".

    Huh???
Why even bother with the Make an Offer???

So, did you buy the coin for the extra $3? Or did you give up on the seller.

Normally I use the BIN when selling. I used the auto decline a couple of times when selling...did not care for it much. I have made offers on some coins and got the auto decline message. At least it let me know on the spot that it was rejected.

Some of those offers to buy my stuff are incredibly ridiculous, and there are times they give their reasoning behind their offer. I will counter with my best price and if they send another ridiculous offer, I will tell them "no thank you" and decline it altogether.
