Unusual 1978 Topps baseball wax rack..

I was sorting through some 1978 Topps baseball rack packs today and came across this rack which I had originally set aside~on the back of the rack, there is a red band running the length of the rack. At first, I thought it may have been some kind of band that was affixed to the rack with some sort of adhesive, but the punch hole in the header card from the factory goes through the red band as well, which means it was there during production in the factory. I am wondering if anyone has ever since anything similar to this~I am also wondering if maybe this rack was packaged when the machine was very low on the cello wrapping and this is something you'd see "at the end of the roll," so to speak. In any event, it makes for a good conversation piece, LOL!

I must have 100 '78 racks--or so--and have never seen one. Or on any other year for that matter.

I thought I saw a few others on eBay at least 6 months or maybe even a year ago with the same red band. Only way to know for sure if it is legit is to rip it. image

Pretty cool, never seen that on any year and I've busted a decent amount of rack in my day. Maybe someone on the assembly line got creative and used the red band as some type of seem used to attach the end of one roll and the beginning of the next?

Lee, that is an interesting hypothesis~I suppose the mystery is part of the charm in this case.

Mike, you are probably thinking of the this rack, as I bought it on ebay from a gentleman who had broken down a full box and was listing the racks individually. I can't recall the name but I believe you had bought a couple from him also. I also bought his empty 78 case. The rack is definitely not tampered with~all cards are in the correct sections, are razor sharp and all seals are intact. I will keep it sealed because of how unusual it is. I did rip a couple of the racks I bought from him a few months back and pulled a PSA 10 Pete Rose #100 from one of them. image

  • This "Big Red Strip" was actually found on a very limited production of Topps "Tribute" racks commemorating the 1977 champion "Big Red Machine" Cincinnati Reds. Along with the red strip each tribute rack would also feature one Red's player showing on top. These racks sold well in Ohio but pretty much remained on the shelves unsold in other regions as non-Red's fans had no interest in them. Word has it was common in rival cities such as Los Angeles to find such racks in a mutilated state still hanging on store racks thus prompting Topps to cease production.

Personally, I think the red band was put on by Mike many, many years ago when he had to urge to rip, as the red would tell him to STOP! The fact that he had vintage sets in binders was just not enough to curtail him from ripping back in the day, so these "red bands" were put on there as an extra precaution.

    Just a thought...

    Hiya Tim

I'm with your theory - the first thing I thought about is the "End" of the roll like when the credit card machine is low and you see "stripes" of colored ink.

I can't believe someone figured this out. I was hoping Don threw everyone off the trail. image
