Additionally, not all wax from 1987-91 was junk, either, though I think the OP was referring just to those issues that qualify for the junk category.

  • So what of the junk wax do you think
    Has the most potential?

As I read your post, The Coasters "Down in Mexico" came on in my itunes. Which made an appearance in a film that the poem in your quote was also used in. It's, like, hobby synergy.

I think only if prices of stuff before 1987 continue to go up, pushing more people into junk. But the upside is limited.

Yes....and one will be officially "un-junked" in a big way in the next month or two.

That depends. Do you plan on ripping it all, grading the best cards and then selling the remainder to someone while lying about the fact that they have been picked over for grading?
  • Hey CDsNuts.... You can send those sets
Back to me any time! I described them accurately and
Did not pick through them. I did not realize you
Were under the allusion that every card would
    Grade a psa 10

I was not looking for every card to grade a 10, I was looking for ANY card that might even potentially be a 10. Funny that you would publicly offer me a return 3 months later but privately you would not when I explained my displeasure. The 3 sets are long gone, I sold them at a loss. Fact is, I specifically asked if the sets were picked over for grading and you said they were not. You sent me 3 nice NM/MT overall sets (1979, 1980 and 1981 Topps) that had zero potential PSA 10s; anybody here that busts sets for grading (there are a few that have posted in this thread) will tell you this completely defies odds when dealing with high grade sets. I was prepared to buy every set you had if they were as you described, but sadly they were picked clean. Not one single common was a potential 10, and not one single star was a potential 9. It just doesn't happen unless you're buying from New England Sports Cards who picks all of their sets clean. Is that who you got these sets from? They were obviously picked over for grading, I just wish you were honest from the getgo.

    Lee
  • I'd also add that $250 or whatever it was means nothing to me; I was prepared to spend 10x that for the rest of your sets. But don't get caught in a lie and then deny it. Just apologize and move on. Or if it's ignorance and you didn't really know the sets were picked clean by the previous owner, I can accept that. But don't put it on me because you don't know what you're selling or that you aren't savvy to the grading game.

I flat out asked you if they were picked over for grading. You said they weren't. They clearly were. I've been busting 60s and 70s sets for grading for the past decade and I know what I'm looking at. I can tell within the first 50 cards whether a set has been picked through.

Why do you ask, looking for other ideas to liquidate your cherrypicked stuff? I sure as hell don't sell them on a graded card message board telling people they haven't been picked over.
  • I would say pretty much anything O-Pee-Chee, Leaf, Fleer Canadian and anything Bowman from '87 to '91 is a decent investment. Maybe Sportflics and Topps Big as well. Most of these were seemingly produced at much lower rates than most wax from that era, comparatively.

    VintagemanEd,

I have some 1989 Topps Hockey that have not been searched through. If you are interested, PM me. Great set for easy PSA 10s.

As far as junk wax, I hear Birdman added quite a premium to 1989 Topps Batman. Series one and two.

Not sure if he was being serious or not. However, there are 3 guys from the 1989 rookie class (Biggio, Randy Johnson, and Smoltz) getting inducted in 2015. Maybe that's what he's referring to.

haha...why so cryptic? I think we'd all enjoy your opinion? Are you referring to the 1989 baseball rookies that will be inducted this summer (Randy Johnson, Smoltz, and Biggio)?

On that note, I was surprised to see that Mattingly's eligibility expired this year without getting in. And Trammell has only 1 year left...I'd really like to see him get in.
  • BaltimoreYankeeBaltimoreYankee Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭✭✭
One of the problems with junk wax is the cost to ship. Somebody may want to pay $10 for a box but add $12 shipping and it's no deal.

    My guess is
    a) it has nothing to do with the current HOF class
    b) there will be an article published in a major publication that will drive purchases of a specific issue (1990 Topps if you force me to guess)
    c) RookieWax was a contributor to the article
I wouldn't bother to be cryptic, I would avoid talking about it at all if trying to hoard before everyone finds out
  • ReggieClevelandReggieCleveland Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yeah, we've been down this road with RookieWax before. He claims to have an infallible way of detecting which 1990 Topps unopened has the blackless cards in it. My guess is that an article will be published that he contributed to that he believes will send people scurrying for 1990 Topps. My guess is that there won't be as much scurrying as he anticipates.

1990 Topps baseball was "un-junked" long ago. Nice attitude by the way.

What do you consider un-junked? I still see recent box sales in wax/cello/rack at $20 delivered, with vending and a few outliers going for less.
  • RookieWaxRookieWax Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭
$20 delivered for a 1990 Topps wax box is about 4 times what those sold for several years ago, when you could get a 20 box case for well under $100 delivered. There are certainly instances in which things have been "un-junked" in a more significant way.

Nobody was selling 1990 Topps or any orher wax boxes for $5 delivered because it costs more to ship them. You can still get them for $15 dlvd which might be up from $10-$12 dlvd 10 years ago. Congrats on the huge 90 Topps boom, I'm sure you made a killing. Just like you will on 91 Score or whatever the hell it is you think is going to skyrocket because of an article 19 people will read.

    Lee
  • $20 dlvd for a box is not unjunked, it's smack dab in junkiness. I love busting junk and would put it at over $50 per box to start losing junk status.

What in the world are you spouting off about?????? I never "hoarded" 1990 wax boxes....I responded to a post speculating that I was.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
1990 Topps wax boxes are on BBCE right now for $10 ea. How can you possibly claim it still isn't junk?

And your 'I have a secret but I'm not going to share' act might have played well in 4th grade, but we're all (mostly) adults here. If you know something and want to share, go for it- that's what forums are for. But nobody is going to play into your 'I know something you don't know' routine. It's lame and sad and nobody cares.

The only thing worse than a know-it-all is a smug know-it-all. And the only thing worse than that is a smug know-it-all that doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. I guess that makes 2 things worse than a know-it-all.

Did I or did I not say there are certainly different degrees to which something can be "unjunked"????? Wax boxes of 1990 Topps baseball certainly sell much better and for much higher amounts than they did years ago, when nobody wanted them at they would barely sell for what it cost to ship them.

And try living by your own advise...."If you know something and want to share, go for it- that's what forums are for...." instead of using this forum for personal attacks.

...by the way, who is the one with the maturity and attitude of a fifth-grade bully on a playground?

  • RookieWaxRookieWax Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭
If a 20 box wax case that used to sit and sit for $100 or less with shipping, now sells for $300 to $350 with shipping...I consider that "un-junked" to a degree. If you don't, that is fine. LIKE I SAID, there are certainly things that have been and will be "un-junked" to a much higher degree.

Really nice condition Topps and OPC wax boxes (clean bottoms) with tight packs from 1986 to 1991 will go up a bit, IMO - I don't see them going any lower. Cellos and racks from those years with stars on them too.

The problem is the volume you would need to go through to recognize any real profit is not worth the time.
