1821 Large Cent, and a Lesson in Quality

1821 large cent, for your viewing.
Although a relatively low mintage large cent, it's not scarce, unless you consider condition.
Most specimens are low grade, or dark, or both.....I had bought a 'bargain' 1821 cent in XF from my wholesale dealer friend a few years back.
It's not a bad coin, but it's definitely dark.
Recently I came across this coin from a dealer who handles a fair amount of large cents. Though it was a slightly lower grade, and priced at 2X
the price of my bargain coin, I had to have it. This date is just tough to find in higher grades with that desirable 'milk chocolate' look, and the few I had seen were priced at moon money. Of course I still have the first coin, as it happened to be the N-1, and this is an N-2 LOL!

Very nice kern. I like the large cents from 1921-1929 in Vf- XF condition. Not easy to find without being messed up somehow.

I love that one, but please post the other as well. I think QDB wrote that copper in that condition still looks great whereas other types would look beat-up.

Many of the large cents of this vintage have issues with porosity or oxide formation that is damaging. This coin has hard surfaces, which is very desirable. Nice color, and only 1 or 2 of the marks would be seen without magnification. This is a nice collector coin.

Roger that - especially the 1823, either the N1 or N2.....I would LOVE to have a '23 N-2 that looked like this '21!

    Loverly.

I have a VF30 N2 with just enough porosity to be troubling. Really, not a bad example. But I much prefer yours, Greg. Especially the color.

That's probably the only positive thing I've heard you say on these boards!
