Purchasing duplicates of cards already owned

I don't have a lot of cards that I really want.

Sometimes I see a better version of a card I already have.

I was thinking about selling the one I already have and then buying the other one. Although it might have to be at a lower price than I bought it.

What does everyone else do? Sell they one they have and buy the new one or keep all of them?

i always buy first, then deal with selling - gives some motivation and doesn't let you miss the card you really want

Keep them. Sell when you're ready or if someone you know needs an example. For example, I don't want to go overboard buying Gretzky rookies, I'm very happy with just owning one of these, but if someone needed one, for whatever reason, I'd offer one up. Or if I just want to make room I'll move one and still have Gretzky's RC in my collection. Good luck.

I have like 4 Ernie Banks rookie cards.
  • JWBlue,

So you don't miss out, I'd recommend securing the copy that you have your eye on first. Then, try to sell the one you currently have if you want to move it to recoup some of the costs of your new purchase. Many collectors upgrade the cards of their collection all of the time. Good luck!

used to be "keep the best, sell the rest".

when i want to keep multiple examples of a really great card, it gets expensive, but it's getting much tougher to let go of the dupes nowadays.

Yeah. This is what I am leaning towards doing.
