Would have to see the back to see if there is paper loss or something else lowering the grade. I remember a couple of years ago PWCC had a Cracker Jack Cobb that looked amazing on the front - PSA 8 quality, but the back had paper loss which drove it down to a 2. Could not pull the trigger on it, and to this day wish I had done so.

Here is the back of the nicer one. No paper loss...

Must be a significant surface wrinkle to knock that first Gibson down to a 4.

If there is, I sure don't see it. The only things I see are MAYBE something going on with the lower left hand corner and some slight staining to the right of his cheek.

Wish all my 4s looked like that. Has to be something we can't see on the scans

I see frosting around the edge of the holder. I think someone cracked the case, took the 4 out and replaced it with an 8. Wait. What? I kid.

Edited to add: Looking at a magnified image I can see something going on under his ear on the right side.

Definitely not an '8' due to the centering, but I was thinking '6'ish range. Would also look nice cracked out and placed into a raw set.

I guess the semi pinhole just below the "n" in Gibson is what you are referring to? I don't see any surface wrinkles, and I would take that card as a "4" all day long.

Centering is more than adequate for an 8. Appears around 63/37.
  • Guys, it's clearly due to a surface issue. Everything else on the card is way, way beyond the range of a 4. That's what makes it so nice! My money is on the "bump"/indent/mark under the "N" in Gibson as well.

what dennis07 was alluding to appears to be a soiled area which begins on Gibson's left cheek and continues past his ear. if you look at the card reverse at the right type of angle, you could also see a faint outline of the same stain, which looks to me as if it soaked through. there also appears to be a couple small wrinkles on the reverse on the outline of the damaged area.

i sincerely doubt a card like this could make it through the grading process with such a flaw going undetected. to a potentially untrained eye, the card will take on a better appearance, bring into question or doubt the opinion which has been placed upon it, and perhaps cause someone to pay handsomely for a card which quite likely won't get an economic bump.

I was being funny, but it's exactly what itzagoner said. There has to be a wrinkle/surface abnormality to account for the grade. I've had other examples with the same issue. Nonetheless, it has great eye appeal for a 4.

Surface wrinkles are the best. Nice looking card.

How about the lesser '4'? Noone made a mention of it....it is totally missing the right hand border. If submitted to PSA, I see that card being no better than a PSA 2 (OC).
  • Show me a card that is graded PSA 2 with the OC qualifier and I'll PP you a dollar.

Well...it SHOULD be a PSA 2 (OC). I never understood the OC / MC debate. MC should be if you see part of another card in the card, or say, something is missing on the reverse. If everything is complete but the card is off-center....well.....

Could that be a crease/wrinkle just above the "C" in Pitching? Might be able to see it better in the full picture above.
