1986 Fleer Basketball appreciation...

Am I just late to the party or is anyone else noticing the other cards in that set going through the roof? I bid what I feel is a new all time high and someone pushed into another level. Barkley, Malone and Mullin are 2K plus. Ewing is right behind them. Isiah is easily over 1K now. Incredible???

  • 86 Fleer rookies in 10's started creeping up with the rest of the collective market over the 1.5 years. I'm kicking myself for not buying them a while back myself. I've built the set in 9 a few times and always sold, and now building it again myself. I was able to acquire the Jordan in 10, but that's tbe only one I will spring for. Good Luck

I look at the 1986F Basketball set as the 1952 Topps set of hoops. It will always be the holy grail. Obviously, 86F is much more plentiful and PSA 9's and 10's are not rare at all, but there are so many collectors that grew up with that set or have some connection to it. The Jordan is the iconic card of the sport within the hobby. Every card collector seems to either own one or want one. I am a bit surprised the other 131 cards continue to shoot up the way they do, just because there's such a high population.

There are over 300 sets on the PSA registry which is by far the highest number for any sport in any set. It's a beautiful design with countless rookies and the low number of cards in the set makes it so appealing to try to build.

yeah, i had been looking at picking up a Barkley PSA 10 last summer, and kinda putzed around not wanting to spend an extra $30 or $40. Low and behold, as it increased probably 50% in 6 months, I got one late Fall, and believe it could be up another 50% since then. so yeah, some of them have gone nuts.

I stupidly decided to start a PSA 10 set a few months ago. About 20% complete with mostly commons. Dumars, Erving, and an en route Pressey are the big ones so far. Shout out to Ty if you are on this board for working with me.

I love this set. I have this set raw and most of the stars in PSA 9 and/or BGS 9. Over the years I have purchased probably 20-30 PSA 10 cards (mostly commons, the biggest star was Drexler) and probably about 20 BGS 9.5's. I've since sold all of those Gem Mint cards. Every time I got going with the set, I looked at how much a Johnny Moore PSA 10 or BGS 9.5 goes for or a Steve Johnson or a Lewis Lloyd and just said forget that. I just can't get into the set in Gem Mint because I would never want to be into a low pop common for thousands. I would love to get a PSA 10 or BGS 9.5 MJ RC at some point. I am in the process of building two sets, one PSA 8 and one PSA 9. I had no idea the other stars (Barkley, Mullin, Wilkins, etc.) had gone up so much in PSA 10.
