Taking Your Cards To Work

Don't know if anyone's ever tried this, but lately I've gotten in the habit of picking a different favorite card every few days and taking it to the office, keeping it on the desk as I bang out work. I've found it incredibly fun to enjoy and admire the card whenever there's a lull. Really transports the mind briefly, and renews enjoyment with the cards and the collection. Highly recommend it. It's easy to win or buy a card and stash it in the bankbox, only looking at the scan. But the scans never do the cards justice, and holding certain of one's favorite cards in hand makes one go, "Wow, I really actually own one of these! It's in my hand." When as a kid it was just a dream.

Working from home has it's advantages. My office and card room are the same room, so they're all accessible, and I frequently rotate what's displayed at the computer desk.

Oh yah. Motivates me to get on the phones so I can afford some more cards!

What about taking your cards to a nice restaurant and showing them off to your friends and fellow collectors, while getting perplexed looks from waitresses? Would you know anything about that one? imageimage

I am a high school math teacher and I always teach a 2 day crash course on compound interest and the stock market. I bring in my McGwire, Bonds, and Clemens rookies as examples of stocks that have tanked. I tell them I used to sell the McGwires in PSA 8 for $150. Now you can get them for $10. I also tell stories of the cards I sold for profit as well. It leads to good discussion about investing.

Didn't that one waiter come over to hold some of our cards and tell us how he loved Willie Mays or something? That was funny.

I used to take my Jon Jones 1/25 red auto card (encased as a PSA 9) to the local Applebee's for UFC fight nights when he was in it. Always got a strage look or two and a question or two from the bartender as I used it for a coaster.

Oh yea, actually, for those who work from home , do you actually spend part of your work day "working" on some of your cards (like inventory/scan and such?). I found that when I need a break, I can just switch to my other computer and carry on..Not that I have ever spent time opening packs of cards during boring meetingsimage Sometimes it's better than what is going on at the office!

I often pick up my mail at lunch, open in the office and sometimes share with co-workers.

Matty, I got to say, I really dig your passion for this hobby!

I surrendered my office at work in favor of working from home a few days a week, so I only have a cubicle (which I actually prefer 80% of the time anyhow).

So I don't dare leave anything too expensive at work, but I do keep some cheap defunct football memorabilia kicking around as my required 37 pieces of "flair".

Outside of that, I only took cards into work once. My boss is a big 49ers fan and was interested in picking up some Montana & Rice autos, so I took some in to give him an idea of what was available.

Being in the tech industry, I work with a lot of fellow nerds. While they share my tech nerd interests, most are too young to really appreciate my cardboard nerd ones.

I look through my cards during my downtime and checkout the forum to see what's going on and live vicariously through collections I'll never be able to own, like the OPs image

I just hit a wall with work and am procrastinating with Babe Ruth. This card blows my circuits on so many levels every time I hold it. The image of the legend as a skinny pitcher with Boston. The contrast and detail in his competitive glare. The shape of the card itself-- so unique. The surface gloss. The age-- 99 years old now! And of course-- centering. I always close out with a trip to view his stats on Baseball Reference. I can waste an hour in a blink on that site! What The Babe did relative to his competition was just insane...

Amazing stat: in 1916, he pitched 323 innings and surrendered ZERO homers! Granted, the HR was not a huge part of the game then, but giving up a few was commonplace. A zero in that column, with that many innings, is awesome.
